Hey canook how would you like to paint a picture of what the first day of operational flying in a Kmax looks like as in where, what lenght of line, weights and altitude and so on. I would imagine there are a few of us that are just a little curios about this beast

Good pic, bs. Doesn't look like you'd be rapping the sides of the cabin with the cyclic, anyway. I always thought they were about as wide as a Spitfire. B)

I was working in Id. at 6000 ft. with a two hundred foot line. We had a 1200 ft. drop into a small landing with a tight turn into the landing. The average load was around 5000 lbs. It was a great learnin tour.

Vortex Ring or settling with power does not exist in a K1200. That is the beauty of having your rotor masts offset 25 degrees! Just pull and it stops...life is good.

So Canook, was a blade strike over the block, that took down the red and white 1200? yes - no? If you have any more info PM me!

Worked as a "choker gogher" for 8 years before getting my licence. From a hookers point of view it is one of the best machines out there. K-Max was the first machine I ever worked under. Seen it do some pretty cool s..t! Also too quiet. Sometimes I'd take a nap during maintenance and be woken up with a hook 3 ft above my nose ! Some long days back then.

I'm sorry to say that you can get settling with power, but once the load hits the ground the aircraft will come to a stop.

Well Canook I tried everything I could to get it to settle with 6000 lbs of concrete and 6500 lbs of wood underneath it and no way, no chance! It will shake like hell but will not settle!
Thats why the topic never even comes up at Bloomfeild! Maybe you were just experiencing LTE? 😉

I talked to some other high time Kmax drivers and they said they have had it settle, but like I said before it will stop once the loads is on the ground. I have had also heard of them coiling up 50 feet in the landind due to settleing, so who knows !
All I'm tryng to say is that the school doesn"t talk about it because they never put the aircraft into that kind of position.
