U was looking for 500 mech's to hang up their hats so layoffs and severence payouts would be kept to a minimum. ..word has it a paltry 170 have paperwork in...and of this 170 most are talking of recinding their papers....
frank schifano said recently that U was 'gambling on 500'.....looks like they don't roll the dice too well either.....800 mechanics at $15k apiece.....12 miilion payout??
cutoff date for filing retirements is feb 15th ....
company is meeting to see what they can do to sweeten the pot......
stay tuned.... 😉

sweeten the pot? Why would they wanna do that ? they have an agreement now?

To make it simple for you........the company has been playing poker with the mechanics, hoping 500 or more would retire and run with the medical, but instead thay are hanging on. What does this mean......the company is on the hook for at least 800 mechanics severence along with sick time buy back. It was voted in and signed by both parties. Can U afford the cash outlay? It does not look promising!!!

You're absolutely right it doesn't look promising...and the assault on the retired employee's medical benefits was the driving force behind fewer retirements taking place.

Most of U's remaining workforce is well past the age of 45...many have health issues that require a steady diet of medications or treatments...or the have a family member that falls into that catagory. Then you have the issue of being eligable to retire from U itself...but fall way short of actual retirement age to start collecting Social Security and Medicare benefits. These thoughts loom heavy for those in that vaccum.

you mean they hoped for 500 plus to retire vs taking furlough and severance.

Aren't most of the mechanics that planned on retiring maxed out in both sick time and accrued vacation? If so than this could be a very expensive miscalculation on U's part

Considering the most Junior people have in excess of 15 years of service in...it's a pretty safe assumption that most are maxed out on pay and vacation time....sick time is pretty much on a case by case basis as some burn it..and some save it for what its intended to be used for.

No doubt that some of these health problems stem from exposure to MEK and the various other chemicals they were repeatedly exposed to over the years.

Sometimes I stand back and say to myself...self, this guy is strange....

MEK, YEP used to sniff it everyday right after first break to make it thru the day....

Give me a break! Sick time would not be involved, only death benefits.

Love Curt

What exactly are the options available to mechanics? How do they compare? What is advantage of retiring without severence compared to taking severence then retiring?

Excellent point UVN U's management should have seen this coming but once again failed.

Well since I took the retirement I can tell you what "my" advantage was...SANITY.

Like Phantom Fixer mentioned and he is dead on, individuals such as myself fall into that healthcare thing where a family member can’t possibly go without healthcare. Waiting for severance like I could of and then searching for employment while 800 others are doing the same thing at the same time seemed, well stupid. I took the little retirement I could get and the flying privileges, while U is still flying and left. Now employed at a very secure company that is global and not going anywhere which is also profitable with benefits and healthcare. 11 holidays a year off, U now is 5, vacation after only six months, U now sucks when compared to what was on all levels.

The only people that I believe stayed on at U were the ones with no other options and burdened with the fear factor of middle job seeker competing against individuals your children’s age which makes one feel angry, frustrated and on and on. They enacted a hate crime law but not a human decency law where employers are free to treat employees as nothing more than trash to be tossed while the big dogs sit pretty no matter the outcome. Corporate America is free to do whatever they want and ruin families, but don't you dare tell that sweet looking honey she has a nice behind least you pay a high fine and even end up in jail. We live in an upside down world and the scary part is there are people, posters on here who actually agree with it all and think it’s hunky dory!

I issues I was inquiring about are what are on the table now for mechanics not your past retirement and sanity. I don't disagree USAirways sucks but don't go around smashing their face in it every chance you get telling them how good you have it compared to them and I don't pretend to believe I know why people have decided to stay with USAirways but I do remember a frequent monker "full pay to the last day" even though its a reduced full pay now. I don't know why its scary on your part that someone would think it is all hunky dory as long as they are still happy after the beating they have taken.... to each his own. Of course when it comes to people like 320 that want to give all they can and then meddle in others affairs and want them give more then their shares and enjoy seeing their pain thats a whole different matter.

I was referring to the entire planet and not the little corner of the world called U...as far as rubbing it in...all I can say is I worked with a very intelligent bunch of guys who all have their own story. For whatever reason they stay and whether I think it's sane or not matters not because it's not my life but theirs to do with what they choose. Why anyone would even think of staying in that God Forsaken corner of hell is beyond me. I don't live their anymore, they do. Call it rubbing it in, it's really not but only my simple observation. Like Jim said: People are strange when . . . .

Another thing, don’t make me laugh using the term incentive, “on the table for the mechanicsâ€￾ U has deleted that term and it does not apply in any shape or form, even in a gaseous fart….. anything they offer stinks to heaven.

I don't know what you were referring to when you said you were referring to entire planet not just USAirways. Not that it matters.

I also don't remember using the word term or incentive in my question regarding what was on table. It was a simple question asking what the mechanics options were to someone who might know not for someone retired that doesn't. But thanks for trying.

I did notice in a previous post you did seem to be saying our world is all messed up or something to that effect. I been called bitter on here a lot when I am really not bitter about anything just having a good time. Is that the same with you? Are you really so bitter at the world or is it act?
