Nope, not April fool's. From what I hear, the mayor was concerned with homeland security, since the airport is so close to downtown Chicago. There are some live webcams of the airfield at http://friendsofmeigs.org . There are a bunch of GA planes stranded on the ramp!!

If i were one of those owners with a trapped airplane, I would be pretty tempted to just take off from the taxiway...
the airport was illegally destroyed - thats rediculous.

Thats a shame to see it destroyed. Looks very real, the Chicago Sun is carrying the story well past April 1st. So NO joke!!
Darn shame to see that field gone, flight simulator is gonna have to get a new airport with a city skyline!!
