Nx NW,

I think MEM/Tokyo could definitely become reality.
Though ANYTHING is possible, I don't see Big RED returning to JFK/NRT, because BK or NO BK, NWA pulled that flight for reasons that made sense to only them, AND that was before AA started flying the route with 3 class service with a 777.

We'll see. You should know by now that NW does not fly routes "just to fly them" they fly routes to make money. If you honestly think a small First Class cabin can carry a trans Pacific flight, you don't know the Pacific. The 787 is ideal for NY-NRT with oil above $40. The 777 isn't much better than the 400 on that route economically, with oil at $50-100 dollars a barrel. Just because you fly it, doesn't mean it's profitable.

Well, your correct.

(As you say).."we'll see"

PRE 9/11, Delta with an MD-11, NW with a 744 and UA with a 777 flew for our side from JFK to NRT. The Japanesse has ANA and JL each with one daily 744( JAL had days with 2 flights). AA only started after DL & NW pulled out. UA moved to IAD to NRT in 2006. AA had the foresight to pick up DL's LAX and JFK to NRT routes, today they are looking very smart.

NW's loads from JFK were ALWAYS full...I know, I worked them. Full doesn't always translate into profit. Delta moved their flight to ATL. Even with a full Business Class it was not profitable to use a 400 with the kind of depressed revenue after 9/11. NW will return the flight with a premium along with a Delta/Cal JFK codeshare. The nomics of the 787 will produce a profit. Looking very smart doesn't mean they are profitable. ANA and JAL, and most likely Cal will be switching to 787's for the route. There has also been talk of a BOS-NRT.

As mentioned earlier on US aviation by eolesen "BOS/JFK-NRT were awarded in the same route award (OST-1998-3419) that allowed AA to serve ORD-NRT" so Delta's and NW's leaving the market had no baring on AA's JFK-NRT start. It has helped their flight...although that will change with the return of NW.

AA took over both the JFK and LAX routes to Tokyo Delta has abandoned, if one airline stopped service then the route authority still exists to be given to another airline.
