Merger with LCC in the spring

Freedom, there wouldn't be any great rescue from PHL and PHX in a merger with UA. UA is strong from LAX/PHL/JFK. There would be no need for PHL/PHX hubs and our routes would be sold off because UA will not give up their ORIENT EXPRESS. JFK would be our east hub and LAX would be our west hub. Florida is not a money maker and feeder flights are possible for PHL and PHX. We would be strong though in ORD but the seniority on the UA side is much stronger and we would be doomed.

Isn't UA bigger in IAD than JFK? PHL still makes too much money to walk away and hand it to someone else.

to be honest i am confused , i have no idea what would happen to us in a acqusion ... but i'd bet alot of money the PHL guys wouldn't just sit and do nothing... i for one wouldn't want to end up under their TED division.

First, lighten up Francis.

Second, "but i'd bet alot of money the PHL guys wouldn't just sit and do nothing" Isn't that something the people in PHL pride themselves in? Sitting around doing nothing? They have the Michelin Man tire belly's as the trophy for their efforts of doing nothing.

Thirdly (and I hope you can count along with me) TED is not a division. TED is a marketing scheme. So sorry ace, but the mechanics that work on a TED bus are the same mechanics that work on a mainline bus. In fact there is no difference in the pilots, fa's, mechanics or gate agents. It is just a high capacity configuration. If you could imagine for a minute the one class USErrways Shuttle Airplanes in the past that only had one class configuration.

Why would DL and CO merge? There are some serious negatives to the DL/CO rumor.

1. Both airlines have large NYC hubs. Besides the obvious of having two hubs so close together, I bet anti-trust issues would not pass muster.

2. CVG/CLE- redundant to an unusual degree.

3. IAH and ATL are also very close to serving the same areas and still does not give the companies a west coast presence.

4. While Air Mic has Guam it still does not have the route authority to serve nonstop US to China, NRT hub and some other huge benefits that both NWA and UAL offer.

Finally why is it that you think Tilton is bad guy, yet Anderson is soiling himself trying to merge. Also, do you really think that Tilton might have only learned of a "rumor" of DAL and CAL from the newspaper? Also, why no theories of NWA being broken up? Hasn't Steenland already admitted he was interested in merging also? While I am not huge fan of Tilton's I do think he is a shrewd business man when it comes to getting the dollar for his deal. And that is exactly what a merger would be for him, a big pay day.

If you want to spin these facts go ahead. It is very easy to do and ALL of us are on the outside looking in. However, it appears DAL is getting desperate as NO ONE wants to marry them. Maybe they can rekindle their love with a Doug Parker combo?

Magsau,

You make some GOOD points(you've got a decent batting average in that area IMHO)

EVERYONE on the Planet KNOWS UAL, does NOT NEED to do a deal, but you would never know it listening from GT !!!!

And perhaps you're right, Maybe DL is the DESPERATE one.

IMO ..AA/UA/NW and CO can "go it alone forever", and ULTIMATELY, that may be what we are ACTUALLY looking at here, though at this point in time, we just DON'T know it !

Given the recent news that DL and NW are close to a deal, and UA and CO are now closer to consolidating as well, I guess this whole thread of a merger with LCC is now moot.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Kind of like UAL/CO/AA/NW and DL.................Sitting at a table in a Bar, having drinks and Talking,............................While LCC is OUTSIDE, not being able to GET IN,........Past the Bouncer, with a Phoney ID !

UA is strong from LAX/PHL/JFK....JFK would be our east hub and LAX would be our west hub.
UA has about as much service as US at JFK, which is to say virtually none. UA serves LAX and SFO with a niche product to compete with AA (UA Premium Service). They have ZERO international presence and don't even fly to their DEN or ORD hubs. US serves LAX and PHX. So I don't know how UA would magically re-enter JFK after a US/UA merger. Especially when they sold off their LHR routes and dropped HKG a while back.

A UA /CO deal would result in both carriers bifurcating a meaty chunk of their route structure to pass DOJ concerns... including the ORD HEADQUARTERS. This is where LCC will jump in.

Oh? What do they have that overlaps? They wouldn't have to divest much, If DAL and NWA doesn't have to divest assetts then i doubt CAL and UAL will divest anything, especially a HQ, or routes that don't overlap. The competition will still be there don't worry.

What makes anyone think that the current UAL HQ is going to move? Its in downtown Chicago and is the only airline based in Illinois. The location is perfect for execs. Its no different than Boeing's HQ. The peasants of course will be elsewhere.

United just moved into their new skyscraper on Wacker St. in downtown Chicago. They were given very good concessions to move in there by the Mayor of Chicago. So they are not going to go anywhere anytime soon. Whoever they merge with will have to agree to keep the name and occupy the HQ in Chicago. The name on the outside of the skyscraper is United Airlines in big letters. No need to tell me that Tilton can break his new lease even with a challenge in court.
