One resident said her children were suffering from skin complaints. “The intentions are good, but when the politicians and big-shot stars have left we’re stuck with the consequences. This house looks pretty but inside it either stinks or sweats,â€￾ she said.

I have helped out on Habitat homes and the quality is better than I have seen on general contractor homes by far. I did a quick google search and did not find any other problems.

The fact that Mr Carter is willing to go out and actually do something rather than just give speeches makes him a far better representative of a former US POTUS than any of the other looser we have. When was the last time Ford, either Bush or Clinton went out and got their hands dirty doing something to help better the world around them?

So, Humanity screwed up. It's a free home. Do a google search on home builder problems. Before you do make sure you are really comfy and have supplies. You will be reading for a long time.

“They let us down,†said Ms. Dempsey, who earns $10.50 an hour at a nearby mall and pays $295 a month for her mortgage and homeowner’s insurance. “They was going to let us live out here and not say anything.â€

Ms. O’Rourke disputes this. In April, HabiJax officials asked residents to report problems. Of 36 responses, she said, workers have resolved 25 and are “working on the others.â€

Even on the blitz construction schedule, she said, all work was supervised by licensed builders and then fully inspected. Professionals — not volunteers — handled the wiring, plumbing, heating, air conditioning and structural work, she said.

“These homeowners have been pulling up carpeting and noticing cracks†in their concrete slabs, Ms. O’Rourke said, taking care to praise many for their work maintaining their homes. But she said, “There’s an innocence when you go into home ownership for the first time. There’s been attention recently because of the scares, people telling them, if you have a crack, it’s a problem.â€

I have cracks in my garage floor, who can I sue? 😛

Maybe they should sue the ones who donated their time to build them their house...

I am sure their is some ambulance chaser out their to accommodate them.

This part caught my eye.....brought back fond memories of Love Canal:

One man pulled up his floorboards to find rubbish 5ft deep under his kitchen.

How do you have 5ft of space under your house? FL does not have basements. Most of the houses are on slabs and I have never seen a house with a 5ft crawl space unless it is on a hill. And IIRC, FL has no hills. I don't understand that part.

I think it is likely a case where the house was not built on a solid foundation, but rather on packed trash, as part of the homesite was built on an old trash dump. He probably dug beneath the surface to find that what appeared to be packed dirt was actually packed debris.

Can't be so:
Habitat for Humanity’s Homes Faulted in Florida Pg1

In the early 1990s the land held a blighted public housing complex, built on land that had been used, in isolated pockets, as a dump. After complaints by residents, the Environmental Protection Agency tested the soil for contamination. The E.P.A. concluded that the land was safe but noted that two buildings had been demolished because of soil settling, possibly caused by debris decomposing under the soil. A later soil test found elevated levels of arsenic, but the Florida Department of Health determined there was no significant health risk.

Ronnie A. Ferguson, president of the Jacksonville Housing Authority, said the two buildings had been damaged by water runoff, not because of soil instability associated with buried debris.

So, the E.P.A., Florida Department of Health, and Jacksonville Housing Authority said the land was OK to build on.
Why sue Habitat for Humanity?

The hell with it then. Why try and help.

Habitat for Humanity has done so much good, only to have a journalistic trash peice like this done on it.

File this under the "no good deed goes unpunished" category.

Growing up in Florida, I can attest to the fact that indeed there are hills there.

Thanks Cos!

IMHO doing a 'google' does not make you googleisious... (nor an authority)

Again, Well stated, I agree with you even though you are a heathen... 😛

I meant to write "Habitat screwed up". Not sure where the "Humanity" came from.

Did they? From the sounds of what the article stated, Habitat is not at fault. The city/state is for not testing the land better.

Given Habitats record, I doubt this will effect them all that much if at all. I do not see them any differently and when I feel better, I will still help out when I can.
