Family Finds Apparent Airplane Part In Back Yard
Inspection Reveals Part Missing From Commercial Jet Airliner
McFARLAND, Wis. -- A McFarland family was surprised to find what appeared to be a piece of an airplane in its back yard Wednesday.
Judi St. Clair was heading into her back yard when she discovered a 2-foot-long chunk of metal that appeared to have fallen from an aircraft, WISC-TV reported.
"I was coming out with the laundry basket to hang my laundry, and I noticed a piece of metal in my yard, a large, large piece of metal in my yard, and I thought, 'Oh, my goodness. That looks like an airplane wing.' But I thought, 'How can that be?'" St. Clair said.
The object tore through the branches of an Ash Tree in the back yard of her home on Marsh Road.
St. Clair said she turned it over to McFarland authorities, who have since alerted the FAA.
"It's a very strange thing. It's kind of really penetrating now, and it's not every day that you think about walking into your back yard and having things fall from the sky. And you worry about a lot of dangers, like with my little grandchild Hannah, I worry about car accidents. But I never worry about things falling from the sky," St. Clair said.
WISC-TV and Channel 3000 confirmed with Northwest Airlines that after flight 1449 from Detroit landed in Madison at 9:21 a.m. Wednesday, an inspection revealed that a missing inboard flap to fuselage fairing was missing and that the DC-9's return flight to Detroit was grounded.
Northwest declined a phone interview, but the airline released a statement saying it is investigating.
"The approximate 2-foot-long piece used to reduce drag was not a flight safety issue," Dean Breest, an airline spokesman, said in a statement.
It wasn't until WISC-TV and Channel 3000 contacted Northwest that the airline knew McFarland police had something that could be the missing part.
Northwest said it wants to make sure that it is the actual part before further comment.
