DOT Secretary LaHood has just released the names of 238 airport that will lose their air traffic control tower if sequestor occurs. 238 closed air traffic ctrontol tower represents 50% of the 371 airports with air traffic control towers in the USA.

I guess eveyone has forgotten Quincy Illinois when a United Express B1900 with 10 passengers and 2 crew collide at the intersection of both runways with a King Air with 2 crew and everybody was killed.

Sooner than later, an accident will occur at one of these 238 airport that Secretary LaHood will close and the public outcry will be the acciden could have been avoided if that airport tower had not been closed.

This is the result when there are not enough controllers to staff the airports due to the 8.5% FAA funding cut.

People saying that this is a 2.5% cut are wrong. The sequester is a 2.5% cut of the total federal budget, however, there are large portions that were exempt from the cuts. That means that agencies like the FAA, that come under the "discretionary" spending face the full effect of the across the board cuts. The law also does not allow for the agencies to make strategic cuts. They are forced to simply cut each fund by the 8.5% amount.

That means payroll. That means less controllers and less technicians to maintain the Radars, NAVAIDS, and communication facilities in ATCT's and other remote sites across the country. It also means increased risk. To mitigate that risk, the FAA has no choice but to close towers and eliminate shifts.

It will also lead to reduced traffic flow. As time goes by, the reduced technician work force will show. As NAVAIDS, communication, and radar sites have failures, they will not be able to be restored as quickly due to the furloughed technicians and elimination of overtime.

This is not a good way to do business. I the agencies were given a mandate to cut by 8.5% with a target date and flexibility to cut strategically, I think it could be done.

This sequester is not the way to do this. When this idea was floated by the President and agreed to by Boehner and the congress, nobody ever though that it would actually go into effect because it so stupid.

But here we are.

Good article on how this will effect the transportation system and the economy here:

You guys are full of sh!t. Obama will fold, find 85 million in wasteful government spending (from a 3.4 trillion dollar budget) and few, if any, control towers will be closed. After the fearmongering coming from this administration dies down, you'll wonder why these cuts where not made earlier.

This notice was sent out today to the FAA employees. This is the reason those towers will be closed. The math with the ATC controllers will not work any other way under the sequestration law. Therefore, towers will be closed, and shifts will be cut.

You can pretend this is not happening, but this is reality.

"As you are aware, on March 1, a series of across-the-board spending cuts – commonly known as sequestration – went into effect in response to requirements of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985, as amended. There has been much public discussion about the effect of sequestration on the FAA. I have unfortunately found it necessary to approve a request to implement a "save money" furlough of FAA employees for up to eleven (11) work days or eighty-eight (88) hours, beginning on or about April 7 through September 30, 2013....

...We will begin distributing official proposed furlough notices later today. Timing and delivery method of the notices may vary depending on your bargaining unit affiliation and specific collective bargaining agreements between the FAA and your Union. The notice will outline procedures and timing for reviewing and responding to the proposed furlough."

That is from the FAA Administrator to employees.

The Federal Aviation Administration told control-tower operators on Tuesday that they would shut down towers at 173 small airports April 7, the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) told ABC News. Another 16 towers will close in September, the group said.

The closures would affect small airports, many of them rural, where towers are manned by unionized contractors rather than FAA employees, according to AAAE, a trade association representing companies that operate those airports.

How many of these control towers, at small airports in rural areas, would even be in existence were it not for a multi-million dollar government subsidy known as the Essential Air Service program? The ESA program subsidizes certified air carrier service to rurul areas that would otherwise be unprofitable, Quincy, Ill being one of them.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) pays a few small airlines $110 million a year total so they can profitably carry as few as four passengers per day to nearby hubs, often for rock-bottom fares. For example, a round-trip in Montana from Miles City to Billings — a two-hour drive away — costs passengers just $88 with a 30-day advance purchase on Big Sky Airlines because the government kicks in $779.

On a recent Macon-to-Atlanta flight, Andrew Rudnicki breezed through a security checkpoint where the six Transportation Security Administration screeners nearly outnumbered the travelers.

The federal budget can easily be cut forty percent with no ill affects on the American infrastructure.
Scab. Crawl back up under the rock from which you came.

I am sure you will gladly crawl across any picket line to take a real working persons job at 40% less pay since you cannot get hired through normal methods.

If you worked as a mechanic for CO after August 13, 1983, that's exactly what you did.

So now you deal with the Obama created solution to a bi-partisan spending agreement......

Instead of resorting to name calling and the like, wht dosent someone suggest that government employee do similar to the private sector?
If they all took a 10-15%cut in gross pay, followed by a freeze of the pension plan with a DC follow on plan, they would prevent the inevitable pain of an unplaned termination.

The sequestration is a reduction of the increase in spending, im a registered Democrat. Even I can see this is a bunch of BS. Nothing but Grand Standing by polititions.
Closing the White House? Really? Then they ought to move the President and everyone out.... Close the MF'r up then.....padlock the door.....Really....

It is past time for the government and the American tax payer to stop providing welfare jobs. Earned Income Credit?! Talk about the fleecing of the Taxpayer. Can you believe congress actually voted themselves a raise? If any of them serve another term Americans should really be ashamed.
