Restructured United May Be Merger Target

Anyone know who Mike Boyd is and if he ever spent one day working with an airline?

He's a consultant that spends everyday talking about them.

I remember him declaring US Airways 'done' a long time ago. He's more often wrong than he is right.

Why does he get so much press time? Is he the only airline analyst on the planet? I've noticed that analyst's never appear that they have worked in the field in which they spew opinions about!

Mr. boyd worked for braniff as well as a few other airlines. If you read his weekly articles, you'll see that while you may not agree with his opinion, it is at least formed with a little knowledge. I'd say it's like when John Madden gets a pick wrong on sunday. just because some beer swilling schmuck happened to be right does not mean Madden doesn't know what he's talking about. Of all the "experts" I've seen, Boyd is the only one who's opinion I take seriously, while of course keeping in mind that he has an agenda, and making headlines furthers that agenda.

Then there is Ray Neidl, who a few years ago touted RJs. Now he says that they aren't a good thing/don't make sense anymore(or something to that effect). Go fig? I know that the Industry changes due to volatilty, but it seems like these consultants play pin the tail on the donkey, and eventually they might actually hit on something--and when they do, they declare themselves experts. I think many of the posters in here have a better idea (or holes in their blindfolds) of what's going on, than the so-called experts.

USAirways did in fact die. It was handed to AWA with the gas tank empty and the keys in the ignition.

He said they were done due to the Christmas Meltdown. It was eventually sold to HP, but that wasn't anywhere close to his prediction.

lol it seems as if some people let facts get in their way - airbus and ac along with evergreen funded both airlines to merge. However why are people talking about US on the UAL forum, amazing how if you lose a little weight you become popular again.. lol

I'm sorry! What 'fact' did I get wrong?

Maybe the fact that U was not "sold" to a west....They were both handed a pot of money to effect a merger...The pot of money came from "outside investors"! Not A west...
Dude, it was sold and 90% of the current management was booted.

US Airways tried to stand on it's own, but it failed several times with several different management teams.

The outside money was given to a new management team in the hopes they could do better.

You can call it a merger if it makes you sleep better at night, but that's just a slipcover for the underlying transaction. U was clearly the larger of the two entities. If it were REALLY a merger, HQ would have remained at CCY.

sold, sold, sold.

You honestly think HP could have attracted that much financing on it's own? HP didn't put a dime into this transaction, the investors were in a sense buying both airlines and are looking forward to the resulting incremental revenue and cost synergies that neither HP nor US could provide on their own.

If UA and CO merge, and Gordon moves HQ to Houston while keeping the United name, does that mean UA was sold, as they are the larger carrier and their HQ disappeard.

According to filings in the bankruptcy case, HP did indeed acquire US-East.

ok, this is pissing me off. no one bought no one . doug parker even said it in a past town hall meeting. there were two airlines in trouble . usairways and americawest. in between there was 900 million dollars from investors who "funded" the "merger". not aquisition ". merger" .doug even stated that usairways was the surviving entity while americawest was a subsidiary of usairways group. i heard it myself in the clt town hall meeting. so in fact the only parties that did the buying were the 900 million from the " investors". now if you guys want to discuss this more, do it in the usairways forum ,not the united forum. thank you and have a merry christmas.
