SJU lays off 400

Will AA offer a small buyout to entice people to leave over a furlough, or station bumping?

Most likely no..Because most of the FSC's who are going to get laid off/furloughed with all the cut backs aren't eligable for the $12,500 package or moving expenses. Most of these FSC's were hired after 9-24-98, so there not covered. They can transfer anywhere there's an opening, but it's their own expense??? Or will AA still pay them a little moving expense??

Yes they can.

That will flip this airline into turmoil if they allow that across the system. It will be months before the airline itself knows who is working where!

They should not allow bumping, just first shot at any posted openings, possibly with something like 'veteran's points' depending on years of service.

Some of those people have bump protection. Some have full time protection and others have part time. If they're below Sept 98 in seniority they have no protection but they can still bump someone junior to them in the system on there own dime. BTW AA doesn't have any choice to letting people bump or not if they're protected by there contract status.

Why should they "not allow bumping"? It is in the TWU contract to be able to bump the system as long as there are people that are non-protected and are junior in senority.

Yep, it looks like bump-n-roll is coming to a admin office near you...

400 sounds like a combined agent & TWU total, not including Executive. When we were sizing StaffAdmin for SJU three years ago, they had 1300 employees just at AA (1000 TWU + 300 agents). I don't believe the agent total included the PR Res folks that were there at the time.

If so, it's a 30% reduction in workforce, which is massive... Still not to the level that the STL layoffs were in 2003, but it's still a huge cut. That said, the operation is literally being cut in half (38 to 18 departures), so the cuts could have been deeper...

PR's a little unpredictable when it comes to RIF's. Family ties matter a lot in that culture, so there will be a higher than usual percentage of furloughees who won't bump to the mainland.

Sure, some will leave to save their job, but at some point you have to ask if it's really worth moving your spouse & kids away from their cousins/aunts/uncles/grandparents, or worse, forcing your spouse to become a single parent while you try to commute on the now-reduced capacity in/out of SJU.

Very true, and the one's that choose to bump out will most likely bump into MIA because there you will find the most junior employees to bump and it's the easiest, closest and fastest way to head back to SJU to see the family on their days off.etc..

Does anyone know if the Eagle flights are staffed with AA or Eagle ground workers? On the seniority list for AA it shows around 550 rampers.

Im about 99% sure Eagle has their own rampers in SJU. Not sure about the passanger service duties though.

I just checked..AE has 190 FSC's based at SJU..employeed by Executive and representd by the TWU.

AA has 551 FSC's at SJU..about 110 of them have seniority below 9/98, so they are own their own if they get rif'd, no $12.500, etc..
