Smoking laptop results in emergency landing

Wonder why it took over 24 hours for this news to emerge? Incident happened on 5/30. Landing was more cautionary than forced.

And the feds want pax to check their laptops and tablets in the cargo hold.
Used in service lithium batteries in those devices are more prone to failure and self ignite than brand new ones. At least in the cabin you have better smoke detection and quicker response times. Every pax is a smoke detector and capable of extinguishing a fire.
