SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - An asteroid may come uncomfortably close to Earth in 2036 and the United Nations should assume responsibility for a space mission to deflect it, a group of astronauts, engineers and scientists said on Saturday.

Astronomers are monitoring an asteroid named Apophis, which has a 1 in 45,000 chance of striking Earth on April 13, 2036.

If its left up to the the United Nations to prevent a cataclysmic impact one only needs to look at their record on peace keeping and other humanitarian milestones.

in other words "eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die" 😱

On April 14th 2036 call me we'll talk.

Although with my lifestyle I expect to be pushing daisies by then. 😛

If they are still around by then, all we'll need to do is send Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck up to the asteroid on the Space Shuttle, and they can blow it up with a nuclear bomb before it reaches the Earth. 🙂
