A friend's son is a check airman for Skywest and really wants help getting on. I'll probably end up doing it, but am worried he'll hate me down the road. I've tried to suggest FedEx or UPS since just about every other place sucks as bad as we do. Any one else having these issues?

Yep, I did. He also has his stuff in at Delta and US Airways I think. It's hard remembering what it was like when I had my stuff out there trying to get a job. Whole different environment.

I'm an AA employee, but if I were recommending a place for pilots to apply right now, it would have to be SWA. They may not grow as rapidly over the next few years, but I don't see them shrinking/merging/going Ch. 7, either.
Of the passenger carriers out there, you're right they're probably the best. In the future however they will have the same problem as the rest of us. We can't charge enough to make a decent profit on our product. They're main advantage beyond fuel hedges is that they buy they're aircraft out right. They're profits however are getting smaller as the cost of aircraft continues to rise. Who knows though, I could ramble on all day. I'm just looking forward to retiring and spending time on the ranch in Wyoming.

I was recently asked by an old comrade for a letter of rec for his son...naturally agreed, but found myself essentially trying to argue him out of having his young man come to work at this mess. By "this mess" I mean US/AWA, not UAL.
I'm with you completely on the idea of FedEx/UPS. It's my best guess that freighters will suffer the least during the next economic downturn, and furloughs are naturally possible anywhere.
