<_< ------ I ran into one of the few AMT's still at work at MCIE today. Even though it's only been a few short week since I retired, the reality of a once great overhaul base reduced to a mere sixty AMT's still boggles my mind! When I first transferred here back in 1992 this place was bristling with thousands! The 747's in the two "superbays", and numerous L-1011s, and other Aircraft going though "C" checks, and "Overhauls", that were striped down to almost nothing. Various components being shuffled off to various shops, to be rebuilt and returned, as new, and reinstalled on an Aircraft once again ready for future customers journeys!-------- We've come a long way! We've seen these same 747's cut up for scrape on our own ramp! We've seen our numbers drop from over seven thousand, and we've seen a once geat Airline sold off to another! But today, there are just sixty AMT's!----- Yet the legacy continues!!!!

<_< ------Thanks nyc! I'll try! But my Son is an AMT also! And a hell'va better wrench than his Ol Man, I may say! Doesn't work for AA though. Works for a small Airline down in the Caribbean! I've told him more than once: "Son, there's more to life than Aircraft!" -------- He looked me square in the eye and said:" Dad, I'm an Aircraft Mechanic! That's what I do!" -------- What do you say to a kid like that? But he's a wheeler/dealer, so he'll survive! These are the people we have be concerned about. The AMT's that are to take our place! My main concern is will there be a job for those like him here in the States, or will all those jobs, that put food on our table, be outsourced overseas? But that may be the reality of it!

Many years ago I used to visit the overhaul base very frequently. I worked in the training center at 1307 Baltimore and we had to come to the overhaul base to test fly and do proficiency checks. In those days it was the 707. I was very impressed with the quality of work done there and the expertise required to do the work. Thank you for keeping us safe and rebuilding those 707s so they looked like new.

MCI,

Enjoy your retirement !!!

As for your son,..............and future USA/AMT employment, I expect that you and I will be having our PERMANENT.."dirt nap",....and company's like AA/UPS and Fedex will still have wrench's turned by in house AMT's.

ALL bets are OFF though beyond that !!

MCI,

ENJOY! I wish you the best in your retirement. I hope you continue to participate in the threads on this BB. Your opinions and insight are needed. Happy New Year! Ken

All the best to you, and FWIW I always liked the TWA livery's old and new.

<_< ----- L1011, I started out working on the 707's and 880's. But not here at MCI. I grew up on the West Coast. Worked "C" checks, and Line work, out there for quit a few years before I ever saw MCI! I came to MCI back in the early eighty's, for the first time for training. And what I saw just blew me away! Beams running through windows, shoring up fuselages with belly skins removed in progress of being replaced! Cracked, and corroded, Main landing gear pivot castings that were being replaced. Something Boeing said couldn't be done! But were!!!------ Never realizing that someday I'd be part of it!

Good luck in your retirement MCI. I hope to continue to see your posts. I see the industry in a different light being on the outside. I'm sure you will do the same.

<_< ------ Oh, I think I can handel it!------ Oh by the way, I understand at least two AMT's from MCI are coming your way! I haven't heard about fsc's. Be nice to them now!

MCI,

Just "put your foot down" on the dreaded ..HDL(NO, I'm not speaking about your cholesterol), but the......."Honey Do List" !!

My spouse and I had a major "go around", because she thought that because I was retired, that...that meant I had "spare" time to do extra chores.."NOT" !!!!

(It was like I was being penalized for not having to go to work every day) !!

It took a good year, for us to find a "comfortable" spot, before we resumed being civil to one another.

Once the Expectation(s) (reluctantly for her) disappeared, I then started to do extra(on my own schedule).

This is a "syndrome" IMHO, that does NOT get a lot of "out in the open" discussion.

 ------ Thanks for the info. Bears! You've hit the nail right on the head with that one! These women feel like now your retired, they have to micromanage everything you do! I can see where it'll take some "readjustment" on both our parts! Might be in for a few nights on the coach! But I'm sure I'll get throught it!
