I've only seen this on UA 737-300's, but what is the purpose of the black stripes on the outboard leading edge slats?

My guess would be that they are an aid in helping to see ice/leading edge contamination. In the past I have flown jets that had these markings; however, they were always jets that did not have leading edge flap/slats like the F-28 and F-100...also the Bae-146....

I would also say that it would be an easy way to make sure that they are extended for takeoff. Clear ice may not show that well, but as for snow it sure would. just my thoughts.....

Someone in the fleet suggested that a black band be painted on the leading edge of the slats so that ice can be more easily seen from the cockpit. I guess it was a good idea in theory but unfortunately the black paint quickly wore away as it was on the leading edge of the wing, leaving a silver "stripe" exposed on the black band. Guess what that silver stripe looks like from the cockpit, especially at night? Well, like I said, it was a good idea in theory...

Thanks for the answers. I always wondered about that, and UA is the only US 737 operator that did this
