UAL Jet diverted to DFW

Our nation's collective stupidity and paranoia continues unabated. A lost Blackberry becomes something to fear. Unfreakinbelievable.

Cell phones, Blackberries and iPods are lost every day on airplanes. Probably by the dozens.

In this case, however, it was found during flight and none of the passengers on board claimed ownership. If you were a passenger on the flight, would you have preferred that the crew ignore the possible danger and keep on going to SFO?

Perhaps, you also know when to take bomb threat notes seriously and when to treat them as pranks.

Come on, Jim. You're north of 60 years old, for chrissakes. I'm not quite as old as you and the answer is "yes, I'd prefer the crew not be so irrational as to fear the lost electronic devices."

Are you seriously afraid of a lost (now found) blackberry or other electronic device? Would you be more afraid of the device if you located an ownerless device in flight or on a turn while you tidied up the cabin? I realize that the airplane is supposed to be swept prior to boarding, but I've found lost devices several times in the past five years, and not once was it cause for diversion.

Back to my first paragraph - if you were a typical 20 year old girl instead of an old man, devoid of the wisdom gained over the course of those years, then irrational fear of someone's blackberry (in the sterile area, no less) would be slightly more understandable.

My English teachers from high school could name the logical fallacy you commited in your second paragraph. It's been too many years for me to remember its label.

The lost blackberry was not a note clearly threatening a bomb on that flight. In today's paranoid airline world, people in urgent need of mental health counseling might assume it is, but that's not rational. Lewis Carroll's got nothin' on the paranoid airline world of today.

If anything, it was like the note found a couple years ago on the UAL transpacific flight that, IIRC, said only "BoB." Which some lunatics translated to "Bomb on Board." Found electronic devices are even less threatening than that note.

I know you're a member of the APFA, but the members of the APA (like the United FAs) might be well served to heed the advice mentioned on the home page of the AFA - and seek EAP counseling if they are overcome by their own overactive imaginations.

Still waiting for the adults to retake the reigns.

In all serious what would be suspect enough? Today is 911, and there have been reports of possible new terrorist actions. Maybe people are a bit more on edge. Always better safe than sorry.

talk to the people in Britain about reporting unclaimed items when they were going through the IRA stuff...as a pax, I think everything should be taken seriously

There are VERY specific written procedures as to what I am to do if an unclaimed bag or device is found while in flight, or at the gate for that matter. These procedures are promulgated by the TSA and the company.

NONE of the procedures include ignoring the device and going on about my business. I am not permitted to put passengers or the a/c at risk simply because "I know it's probably no big deal."

the fact that the plane apparently overnighted at ATL should also be cause for concern. It should have been cleaned and any passenger belongings removed.

I would rather not see every flight w/ an unclaimed electronic device diverted but the sad reality is not the way it once was. And there is some convincing methodology a flight attendant can use to determine a device is safe, prudence is always the appropriate measure.

two UA aircraft downed b terrorism is 2 too many.

I'll side with the 'Safety First" thought... If the Flight was on it's first leg of the day and this was found, either the Cleaners missed it or it belongs to one of them and they are pi$$ed off. I agree that today would be most on everyone's mind for a Terror attack, but then again, the Terrorists know when to "Kick & Run". I doubt today would be on their list. They will wait until they think our guard is lowered a bit and try something again. Note they threw out another Vid today... Typical Terrorist tactic. They want to spread fear so we cower. Not in my neighborhood... I'm surrounded by Rednecks... These guys eat Bullets instead of peanuts.
