With the advent of charging our customers $15.00 to check their first bag now upon us, one must ponder how the corporation will collect these fees at a skycap station in front of the terminal? The CWA has advised the corporation that it would be in violation of the CBA to permit skycaps to perform a CSA function at the curb. This makes me wonder what exhisting uniform pieces will be appropriate for the different environmental conditions our people would be exposed to. Currently the heat index outside in many cities is staggering. Some skycap stations are protected from the elements and some are exposed to the days weather.

Do you think the corp. is ready to roll out the khaki shorts and cotton polo's for those agents???

I wonder if the corporation thought about this aspect of the plan prior to implementation? Just like the lack of baggage control (sizer boxes) between the initial check-in point and the departure gates.

This program has the aroma of a can of worms rather than a well executed plan. The perceptions of our customers will further deteriorate while the corporation hastily grasps for all means of revenue generating ideas, intended to stem the costs associated with the escalating price of crude.

Whats next?

For the 45+ years of this airlines the skycaps have worn a comparable uniform to the agents don’t see a problem with the now uniform of the agents. As far as management launching curbside check in for agents one has to wonder give their track record..
This whole thing reminds of 1977 those of you around back then know what I’m saying

Why not simply change the language in the CBA to allow the skycaps the ability to collect the fee? This would negate the need for the agent to be compromised away from their core responsibilities and would increase productivity.

And this is why the agents have a union because of thinking like this. It is a disgrace that management in America thinks this way People like you scare me."Why not simply change the language in the CBA" are you that._______never mind you

Acording to a recent newspaper article, US Airways has terminated its skycap contracts with Huntleigh.

In PHX there is a goodbye potluck for all of the skycaps. Have not heard a word if the CSA's will be working the curb, or if there will not be curbside checkin any more.

The "when" was a weekend article in the Beaver County Times. I'll have to check the date and when effective, but there will be no curbside check-in due to the baggage fee collection.

Beaver County Times 6/20/08..Effective date of termination is 7/09/08 the first day of the $15 bag fee collection.

I've said all along that we don't need skycaps. I have nothing against skycaps, but we should be doing that ourselves or let the customers walk inside and stand in line like everyone else that refuses to give someone a tip for doing the job they get paid to do. And don't say that they get paid less than minimum wages. They knew the rate of pay when they accepted the job.

If our own agents ever take over skycapping, hopefully we won't see anymore overweight bags, and more bags than you are allowed coming down the bag shute for free.

When I worked the bagroom, I was always catching the skycaps sending down taped boxes full of new clothes going to SJU, CLT, BDA, & MIA. I would pull the passengers PNR and meet them at the gate and have them charged the excess bag fee. They refused to pay because they would say that they paid the skycap. I would then explain to them that their under the table tip didn't count. When they still refused to pay, i'd tell them that's fine with me. You go ahead on your trip and have a nice vacation. But your boxes of new clothes you plan on selling aren't going. And on behalf of me and my fellow employees, we thank you for the new clothes that we are going to divide up between us. All of a sudden out comes a mysterious credit card to pay for the excess bag and weight fees.

Regarding agents working outdoors, heat isn't the only issue. Consider standing out on the curb on a chilly, windy night at SFO, in a polo shirt!
Apparently management hasn't considered the bone-chilling possibility. So far, their only response is a chuckle.

The fee collection starts in 4 days and they don't know who is going to be at the curbs yet. In CLT the skycaps last day is 7/31.

At Florida stations (as well as desert stations where temps can get upwards of 100+ degrees on a COOL day), they better issue agents new pants that can actually BREATHE!!!

A chuckle? Tell that to my...

...or so I've heard, I only "pretend" to work for an airline (it's quite a fantasy, too).
