Us Airways To Cut More Pittsburgh Flights

Thanks 320 for the valuable link.
You said over a month ago that more flights would be cut out of PIT and you were right.
Any word on the November schedule or additional cuts ?

The Florida and Atlanta flights will be assumed by OAs (the Atlanta route is served by two other carriers already).

PIT is enjoying record O&D, and as I said when the leases were broken in BKI--"US needs PIT more than PIT needs US." Thus far, that prediction has been right on the money.

Blind pigs do find acorns on the ground every once in a while.

What is so tough about predicting that Southwest was going to kick US out of PIT?

oops. I almost forgot........

Once again the media in PIT is sensationalizing a truely non-event. Seasonal adjustments to our schedule should not be some headline grabbing event. The reduction of 15 flights from a 225 flight operation is very insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Where was all the press drama when FlyI reduced their schedule from 10 flights a day to 7? That was a 30% reduction in the flight schedule - much greater then ours on a percentage basis. Where was the press drama when NW dropped their flying to MKE? That was a loss of non-stop service by one carrier on a route served by 2 competing carriers. The constant barage of negative media reporting on US makes me sick. When something positive happens (when we increased summer service from 220 flights to 239) the news is buried in a 1 paragraph blurb on page E-13 of the travel section of the news paper, but let us seasonally reduce UNPROFITABLE FLYING and it is front page news.

Pittsburgh needs to get over their feeling of abandonment and enjoy their now found LOVE of all the other carriers flying out of PIT.

How is our pulling out flights from PIT to SAN, SEA and ATL in any way related to WN's entrance into PIT? WN doesn't fly to ATL at all and only offers connecting service to SAN and SEA - the same type of service we now offer.

It likely has nothing to do with WN. There is probably not enough connecting trafic left with the cutbacks to suppport those spokes. Any PIT O&D traffic to these markets can now be connected westward through LAS or PHX vs PHL ala the merger.

I think (based on the last round of O&D numbers from last year) that if US drops SFO or LAX, you will see UA or WN pick up one or both (WN would be OAK/SJC, obviously).

SEA and SAN, probably not (although I do think US will lose some ancillary traffic to those destinations for folks who know better than to connect in PHL).

As for PIT, it's clear (based on the O&D increases) that US was extorting the local population or completely unable/unwilling to drive that "valuable" O&D traffic--it has gone nowhere but up since the hub pulldown. Expect that trend to continue. If LUV starts running to MHT or PVD and if Airtrain could be convinced to try LGA again, it would be ideal for PIT based travelers.

US Airways cutting 15 more Pittsburgh flights in September

See Story

There will be more PIT flight reductions in the not-to-distant future and the new schedule will be loaded into Sabre soon.
