Seems like the airlines (all of them) have decided that they dont have to serve every single airport in the country any longer.

What are you talking about? There are thousands of airports that never had and still have no scheduled flights.

I have flown to IPT (home of Little League baseball). It's far better than driving from PHL. What would be really nice is flights from PIT instead and free up a little space from overcrowded PHL. Oh well.

Yeah, I know that. I was being facetious. Many years ago, each airline had their own little niche markets. Then, everyone decided they had to serve every (- not literally every, but many, many, many) airports that they would never have thought of serving in areas of the country that they werent that big in. Now, it appears that with the cutbacks, many of these airports that didnt have service long ago, or didnt have as much service before everyone decided to serve every airport (again, not every, but many) are losing service. Some of these cities seem to think that just because they HAVE an airport, airlines SHOULD fly there. My point was that that isnt the case. There are people in many parts of the country that have to drive an hour or three to get to an airport and while it doesnt help the city thats losing service, there are other communiites out there that havent had the service to begin with, and they are still functioning. If the city isnt making money for the airline, there is no longer a need to keep it open just to say you fly to X amount of cities.
Maybe WN has it right after all? You dont have to fly everywhere just because....

the big cheeses at corporate will start closing them a little at a time

as soon as summer trave is over LOOKOUT small cities with 10 or less flights a day

That's their business plan, and it's not possible for everyone else to be just like WN. That doesn't stop them from trying and failing, over and over (Shuttle by UA, Metrojet, CO Lite, etc.) 🙂

atually what Piedmont is doing is triggering the "EAS" program.

With EN being the sole 121 scheduled carrier, they must first get permission from the DOT to leave the market. If the DOT says "sure", then EN can end flights. If the DOT says no, then Williamsport will go out to the EAS dockets for bid by interested carriers - such as Gulfstream, Colgan, Commutair, etc. The DOT will ask carriers to submit their bids within 3 weeks, then give the communities about 2 weeks for public comment. At that point, the DOT will select the new carrier to fly to IPT. My money, however, is on Colgan to IAD or Gulfstream to CLE via DUJ.

good luck to all the employees in the afected city. I wonder if US will try to get those cities where mainline is inside and outsourced on the outside to be downgraded. rate the way the company has done there no reason why we should believe they wouldnt try that. Also I wonder what will or could happen to those cities that have say one or mainline jets and and the ramp is piedmont, given that piedmont has a number of cities

When DH began his Part 121 flying career at Pennsyvania Commuter Airlines, he was based at IPT for a short time. Then US Air bought them and things sure changed (and more than their name to ALG).

RDG is 15X larger than IPT and no service.

Man, this has got me worried that HVN-New Haven will lose service. However, I really think US wouldnt drop HVN, as its a huge university city. HVN being so close to LGA,JFK and BDL is what worries me.

Gee, an hour flight is better than a 3.5+ hour drive? Who would have imagined such a thing? Flights from IPT to PIT? What the hell are you smoking? You can connect to a handful of places out of PIT compared to virtually the entire system out of PHL. I know the internet allows people to make asinine statements without consequences, but that's just asinine.

The area can really only support one flight a day on a dash 8, at best. Within 90 minutes of the airport, you can get to AVP, SCE, ELM or MDT. If you're more than 30 minutes from IPT, those other places are worth consideration. IPT is dying and has been for years, that's why I got the hell out of there a long time ago. A lot of the crews like the overnights there and they're not going to be happy at all.
