Verizon Airfones to be removed (someday)

Or our senior SAN>SFO>SEA>LAX commuters check in from at 15,000 feet over Philly??? Hmmmm, maybe I'll get an international trip outside the UK Division after all. Life keeps getting better. And I was excited about the EMB 190's.

How does one do that?
Just call scheduling and tell them you're in the "parking lot" - and forget to mention that the "parking lot" is making circles over Lancaster at 15,000 ft.......

cell phones don't work at 15,000ft

Commom sense says that your cell phone wont work in the air! Duh!

I'm always afraid kids will choke themselves on it. No one ever uses them anyway.

I found this from the article interesting:

The decision to stop selling phone service on commercial airlines is not a complete surprise. Last month, the company dropped out of an auction for licenses to provide in-flight broadband Internet services.

Airfone had bid in early rounds, but a division of JetBlue Airways and AirCell, a company based in Louisville, Colo., ultimately won the two licenses. Those companies are expected to develop wireless "hot spots" on planes that will allow passengers to check their e-mail messages and potentially make Internet-based phone calls.

I used the Airfone once to call scheduling while sitting on the gate during a CUN turn. I was either trying to avoid a NSI or pick up a trip I really wanted. My cell phone won’t work outside the US and I didn't want to get off the plane. I don’t recall exactly what the total cost was, but it seemed worth it.

Generally, cell phones will not work above 10,000 feet because it’s designed as a terrestrial service.

I used it a couple of times, to call medlink. It was nice to call right from the ill pax seats. I will miss it for that reason.
