How many flights did US get across the Pond today? Last night the PHL-DUB flight got part way there and turned back. It looks like a huge mess all over northern Europe. Hope the ash will blow away soon.

ATLANTA, April 15 (Reuters) - U.S. airlines canceled half their trans-Atlantic service on Thursday because of a gigantic ash cloud spewing from a volcano in Iceland that has closed airports in northern Europe, industry officials said.

A comparable number of flights, and possibly more, will likely be canceled on Friday, the Air Transport Association trade association said.

Ash Spreads Across Europe, Closing More Airports Friday
By ALAN COWELL, NICOLA CLARK and MARK McDONALD
PARIS — Air travel chaos across the globe deepened on Friday as a vast, high-altitude plume of volcanic ash from Iceland spread further across northern and central Europe, forcing authorities to close airspace and ground airplanes to forestall potentially catastrophic damage to jet engines.

I got out of Germany yesterday (15th Z day) just in time. We were rerouted South of our proposed course just prior to takeoff and stuck at FL300 across the pond.

As per the company...... 54 and counting

I couldn't believe that they waited till the last minute to cxl. todays Clt-Fra & Clt-Cdg flights. I left home approx. 1315 & they were showing on time on the web site. Got to work both cxld. Leaving long lines at the counter after the down line stations had sent them. I fail to understand why US would hold on to these so long & strand all these people.

I forget exactly where, but there was a discussion on this exact thing and what basically came from it was that there is no need for carbon offset for a natural phenomenon. Iceland did nothing to create the incident, it was going to happen regardless. And also the effects of the eruption actually reverse the effects of global warming as the silicate in the ash reflects sunlight thus cooling the earth. Carbon emissions do not and trap heat already here further warming it. So if anything Iceland should get a major credit! 🙂

If this ash scenario continues for some time:

1. Fuel prices should begin to decline.
2. Cruise ships bookings to Europe will go way up.
3. Cruise lines may reallign routes to reflect this new paradigm.
4. Time for GE and RR to develop a new ash resistant engine - pronto 🙂
5. UAL may prefer to merge with a carrier with less European exposure than CAL 🙂

 Or Maybe Continental would prefer to merge with a carrier with less European exposure than itself? (By that I mean United 😛 Not US)

Anyway, I wonder how badly this affects US. What is US doing with the European metal? Are they just sitting around or are they flying aroung somewhere?

I wonder if since all these flights have been grounded now for 4 days and counting including inter-Europe if this will create a fuel surplus thus lowering the cost of oil and fuel? Comments..............
