Public opinion was more against gay rights in the 90's than it is now. DADT was a stop gap to allow gays to serve under the radar and to quell the witch hunts.

It will be interesting too see how the courts deal with equal rights for gays in the rest of society. I think this will make it even more difficult for the SCOTUS to uphold any of the gay marriage bans. Short of amending the COTUS I think gays will achieve equal right sooner rather than later.

But there's been a dramatic shift in public attitudes toward gays in the military over the last 17 years. In 1993, a Washington Post poll found just 44 percent of the public thought gays should have the right to serve openly in the military. Now 77 percent of Americans believe gays and lesbians should have that right, according to a Washington Post-ABC poll released last week.
