Acceptability/apologies like democracy must come from with in. If the people do not feel they have any thign to be sorry about, then an apology will not be forth coming. Just as in Iraq or Cuba, if the people are not willing to fight for freedom, then forcing it on them will not succeed.
I agree with you that external influences are not always successful such as in the examples you cited but that is the way the game is played. You can’t always win.
My wife and I had considered adopting but given our age (we got married late in life) our work schedule and a few other factors, we do not feel we could provide an appropriate environment to raise a child.
As you stated, the past cannot be changed. I do feel that an acknowledgment of what happened would be a start. Virginia came close and I would like to see the rest of the nation follow suit.
Yes, since 1964 when the civil rights amendment was passed, blacks are on the same legal footing as anyone else. IMO, they along with most other minorities of color do not have the same opportunities. Schools in the inner cities are not as good as those say in 90021. Just as one example, last year there was a piece run on the local news. A black family, clean cut, with cash in hand went in to an apt complex with an under cover camera. No vacancies. A white couple goes into the same apt complex 1 hour later cash in hand. They magically had an open apt and got to rent it. When confronted, they kicked the news crew out. Go figure. Then there was the story a few years ago about the US secret service guys in Denny’s. Why was it such a big deal this past super bowl that there were two black coaches? Why is it that Obama is the first black person to run for POTUS? There was a program on last season with two families. One white, the other was black. Through the magic of some really incredible make up, they "changed" races. Both families commented how differently they were treated by people.
While there is no way to determine exactly how much racism, sexism, or any other –isms exist, they do exist. Probably far more than you would like to admit and far less than I believe does exist. I do know that if given a choice, I would rather come back as a ‘white’ rather than a minority of color.
I’ll have to look for the study but IIRC, our compassion is a lower percentage of our GDP than several other nations. I’m not saying that is bad, just pointing out that we donate far less as a percentage. Also, IIRC, those donations sometimes come with strings attached. Again, it’s our money and we can attach what ever strings we want to it, but that can lead to resentment especially if the nation in question is between a rock and a hard place.
There are a few countries I would rather live in but my family is here, my job is here, I have no interest in learning another language (american was enough for me) so I stay where I am. Switzerland and Finland are two that I can think of off the top of my head. Aside from that, there is no Utopia as you pointed out. What disappoints me about this country is there are so many who are content with the way things are. I am not, I see the US and think that there is so much more potential but that’s just me. Never happy with what is, always wanting better.
