What's new

What would you do?

The CEO and the rest of senior management serve a very real purpose -- whipping boys for the unions.

If you were all self managed and self-directed, you'd have nobody else to blame but yourselves...

Seriously, if y'all would take just half the energy you expend on bashing management, and direct it towards the real enemy --- your worthless union --- you wouldn't have half the complaints and grievances you do right now.

I'll take a stab at this one. I spent 15 years in another industry where management actually "RAN THE OPERATION". We were unionized but we knew who was in charge. We were all expected to clock in on time and be in your work area ready for an assignment or continue on the previous days project. We had two 10 minute breaks and a 30 minute lunch by the bell which you wisely heeded. There were expectations and accountability. The unproductive were fired. The thought NEVER occured to us the business was being mismanaged and as a result morale was high. You could say "I cut my teeth" in observation of how management should conduct the day to day operation's of a business. This grand experiment of letting consulting firms and unions run a business is a dismal failure.

OK, but how large was your company and your shop?...

If AMR were the size of an Allegiant, that type of management would work. But you're not. You've got tens of thousands of employees in a given job description, operations in 40 or 50 cities in just the US/PR, with an expectation that the management processes used in each location should be the same across the board. And that doesn't even take into consideration federal oversight and compliance requirements for a half dozen different agencies ranging from the FAA, CBP, SEC, and OSHA, just to name a few...

The management in my company can pretty much fill in to any position in the company. We even have been known to cover midnight and weekend shifts for sick calls. That wouldn't work as well if we had a couple hundred employees.

What AMR needs is for the BODs to do their job and oversee the leadership of the company.

A well know industry commentator recently made the obvious observation that AA needs new leadership.

As the old Russian saying goes "Fish rot from the head."

BOD's could just demand removal of the consulting firms and see who can and cannot do their jobs!

Just as the unions could remove themselves from the "working together" union busting plan and see which managers/supervisors can and cannot do their jobs.

Now you're expecting more useless yuppie twits to do their jobs. What the hell is wrong with you, anyway?

I'd probably do exactly what UA did. I'd close the airframe overhaul bases. MCI is probably already done, but TUL and AFW would look like IND and OAK. Might not produce tons of net savings, but likely enough to boost the pay of the line maintenance mechanics. Happier line maintenance, fewer delays.
