What's Next for US?

I think they missed one scenario:
""We think the following three scenarios make sense: US Airways and Alaska Airlines; US Airways and American Airlines; US Airways and JetBlue Airways - or remaining independent," Becker said in a client note."

Think Hawaiian Airlines they have Pacific expansion under way and are expanding the fleet with New AirBus A330's and a Mix of 767 they have the equipment to make us more of a global airline.

It could be a nice fit.... hawaiian-air-route-map.webp

I've never looked at a Hawaiian Airlines map. Route wise, it looks really good (Australia, Japan, Manila, etc.). 4,000 employees, 33 aircraft, and a market cap of $361 million. Similar unions. It could be done.

😀Hawaiian makes sense, in that it is a well run airline with happy employees and LCC could come in and destroy that pronto. For that reason alone, I think it will happen.

I don't think this will happen . From what I have been told , Hawaiian has a weak route network (leisure only), They would
have liquidated except that Aloha and ATA got there first, and a
bloated cost structure. But mostly, they don't have a good route network that's worth buying. The only merger partner that makes sense for US is AA. And possibly in the distant future providing that US remains independent would be Delta or the new UA.

Hm.

Hawaiian and US would have around 50 widebody aircraft to play around with at the moment and nearly 30 more widebody orders to play around with in the future.

US also brings some 757's for Hawaiin to play with.

Maybe US could yank the chains on them 767's flying to San Jose and such and redeploy them elsewhere and stick some 757's on them routes.

I think US should remain independent. Maybe US can pick up some American assets here soon?

Hasn't US taught you anything? Big Airlines don't die quickly, they get sick, file for bankruptcy twice in three years, then totter along like the rest of the herd.

The only American asset US may be picking up is the payscale for some workgroups.

See ya around yah?

Yeah, but what's going to happen to American once it files for bankruptcy? What are they going to do different? How are they going to be different?

I wouldn't count on American's bankruptcy as a savior for US Airways. The rest of us used that strategy except we were expecting US Airways to go Chapter 7--it was just the capacity reduction we all felt was needed (numbers of seats, not LCC specifically). Didn't happen. Oh well.

As JFK pointed out...it is hard to kill an airline. There's always someone with more money that sense who believes they can make money where others have failed--see also, Carl Icahn and Frank Lorenzo.

I've heard that Hawaiian is doing well on its Manila route and they got a Haneda slot, not sure how Sydney is going. Pago Pago and Papeete have been served for a long time now. I can see them doing Guam, Taipei and maybe Bangkok or Hong Kong in the future.

Most of HA's Pacific destinations would be nice additions to US's network, but the problem is most of them are already flown to nonstop from the west coast. A US/HA merger would require 2 stop/connections through US hubs plus HNL, then onto other destinations. Routings on the competition now can be booked as 1 stop/connection via the west coast and non stop over the Pacific (bypassing HNL). Most of the added destinations/routings from a US/HA merger would be hard to market.

Wow. Another internet clairvoyant. USA320PILOT is that you?

AMR will be just fine without USAirways.

I wouldn't get any hopes up. I could see AA declaring bankruptcy, but actually shutting down? No way.

Ouch 😛

I don't think American will shut down, for the record. It was more tongue in check. I do think American will file bankruptcy. But that's irrelevant to whats next for US Airways.

US should continue building up Charlotte, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Phoenix and remain independent.

Doug's rationale for US merging is to reduce capacity. The UA-CO merger will accomplish that. What is wrong with US just being a small fish in a big sea? If they can run a good airline, what does size matter?
