Why Government Assistance in Education Doesn't work

I just opened Facebook and no Bull I saw this from a friend of mines oldest son. If his comments don't convince you I don't know what will. Here it is:

I finally recieved all my grades for the semseter and found I fell short of the required 2.60 semester GPA to keep my Financail Aid for next year 🙁 ...After a few days of uncomforable disappointment, I come to find out my final exam grade for Applied Strengths was entered incorrectly, the correction brought my semester GPA from 2.40 to 2.65!!! Now To Eat Like a King Because It's Time To Celebrate!!!

From a 2.4 to a 2.65 and he KEEPS his financial aid? That's like being promoted to assistant janitor. Can you see the hiring manager's faces when someone says, "well he raised his grade all the way up to Horseshite let's offer him a job in our in a key position".

NO ONE should get aid if their grades are below 3.5. at 2.65 he's unhireable for anything above the Mgmt Training Program at Enterprise. When you demand excellence, surprise!! You get it. When you tolerate waste and sloth? You get that.

This is what happens when Government throws money at a real or perceived problem.

So your freinds son is either lazy or an idiot. This is the only thing we can really be sure of. There are kids out there who flunk out whose parents are footing the bill and not the government.

And therein lies the point. If I as a private citizen decide to take MY hard earned money to put a slug like the above in college that's not a problem. However when a government agency through either a loan or grant program pays for mediocrity then that's exactly what we get.

If I was paying the freight as his parent the least of his problems would be a 2.65 GPA. This just further points out that government no matter how well meaning just can't do the job. We raise kids with the notion that their self esteem is critical. Little Billy graduates unable to diagram a sentence but praise Jesus he feels good about himself.

Give me a good self loathing iPod inventing fool anyday!!!!

You're going to have to come up with a better example than your friends lazy and/or idiot son that government assistance with the cost of college does not work. Gi Bill and veterans grants helped put me through school and I did just fine.

Would it be safe to say that most Military folks are more highly self motivated then the general population? I would argue yes to that. Given that I tend to leave the Military out of the discussion.

Since the Great Society of LBJ our currency has inflated just about 170% What is more disturbing is that Education costs have risen just over 400% and HealthCare 700%. The reason for the price growth is the massive amount of government money injected into both Markets. A free market in education and my poster child example would be forced to compete for the fewer open seats in college. Harvard & Yale would have to compete even harder then they do now for the brightest and best. As a result prices would then drop, social Darwinism would take care of Mr 2.65 one way or another. He'd either pull his head out of be thrown out to make room for someone more capable or more hard working to fill his seat.

The kid in the example is good with his hands and IMO is totally mismatched as a result of the non stop pressure to go to college. He'd likely be better served in Welding School and possibly make more money. This is yet another reason to adopt a more free market approach to education.

Government aid for higher education works just fine for the universities and colleges. It keeps that tuition coming in to support all those tenured profs who let their TA's teach their class.

Indeed it does. Excellent Point. Free Market competition would take care of that nicely because the tenured prof's would have to pull their weight and as a result their CUSTOMERS get better educated.

Guess I should have capitalized the I in GI Bill. Or maybe I should stop posting after a night shift.
Now if you are referring to my choice of careers I have no comeback for that. 😉
