The Flight To Bankruptcy Court

NEW YORK - Somebody needs to buy airline execs a new calculator.
Northwest Airlines (nasdaq: NWAC - news - people ) yesterday added a $20 surcharge to discounted round-trip tickets, ostensibly to help cover the rising cost of fuel. The move will prompt other U.S. carriers to do the same, since the airlines embrace a herd mentality. But it doesn't take a math degree to realize it will do little to sop up the extra fuel costs at Northwest or its competitors. In the end, it may fuel nothing more than trips to bankruptcy court.
