Obama asleep at the wheel or will he be more flexible after the elections?

What class or should I say Akula Class?

A member of the Senate Armed Services Committee has asked the Navy’s top admiral to explain reports that a Russian submarine operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico recently.
“The submarine patrol, taken together with the air incursions, seems to represent a more aggressive and destabilizing Russian military stance that could pose risks to our national security,” Sen. John Cornyn (R., Texas) stated in an Aug. 17 letter to Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert.
“This is especially troubling given the drastic defense cuts sought by President Obama, which include reductions in funding for antisubmarine defense systems.”

The Russians bears's claws are not nearly as sharp as they used to be. Their submarine force is a shadow of what it once was as is their strategic bombing force. They still rely on the draft to fill the ranks and it you do end up getting drafted it means you did not have the proper connections to get out of it.

Me thinks that Sen. Cornyn is more concerned with the defense contractors in his state and the money they bring to his reelection fund more than anything else. The fact of the matter is even if you cut the defense budget by x amount over the next ten years there's not a country in the world that can take us on a conventional battlefield.

The senator seems to be confusing "restricted airspace" with the Alaskan ADIZ. The ADIZ is not restricted airpspace as it covers international airspace.

Your last sentence gives me hope that maybe Dr. Paul's views are rubbing off on you.

As to the "Russian Bear", I agree that the bear is aging with dull claws. However A bear even a weakened one can put up quite a struggle.

Whoopee F-ing cool. You come off with some lame explanation but fail to mention the fact that the ADIZ is the last line of ID.

Says who? An unconfirmed report for a web site and a Texas Senator?

Even if it is true how is that proof we need to increase the defense budget. Increasing he defense budget will not prevent Russian subs from going there. Just because you spend a certain amount does not automatically mean you will detect every sub that wanders into a certain body of water.

I recall reading an interview with a US general at the height of the cold war. The right wingers were crying that the Russians were ahead of us in the arms race and we needed to keep up. They asked the general if he would be willing to switch forces with the USSR to obtain the advantage. He said not a snow balls chance in hel!.

I guess the same baseless arguments are still taking place.

Socialist Army !

People like you and the GOP seem not to understand some very important facts about the defense budget.

One, you could cut a $100 billion a year out of the defense budget and we would still spend more than all our potential adversaries combined. Two, even with those cuts there is no country in the world that could hope to beat us in a conventional war. Three, spending more does not address the real issue. The issue is the massive cost over runs in any number of DOD programs. Just look up the original cost estimates of programs like the F-35, V-22, LPD-17, LCS, F-22 etc, etc and see what they cost now.

On a little side note about our former Soviet adversaries I remember what a former Red Army soldier said about life in it. When asked how it was his one word reply, "Misserable".
