An airport's pilot base -- the number of pilots assigned to start and finish their trips from a specific airport -- depends directly on how many flights are filtered through an airport on an hourly basis. As more flights are added at BWI, Southwest will base more crew members in Baltimore, Southwest Chief Pilot Bert Seither said. The discount airline hires 10 pilots for every plane in its fleet. Southwest currently has 448 planes and plans to purchase 30 new aircrafts in 2006.

Southwest Airlines will add at least 140 new pilots to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport over the next two years, needed to fly 14 new Boeing 737-700s coming to the airport.

The new pilots will be among 600 the Dallas-based carrier is adding nationwide. Ten pilots are needed for each plane the airline operates, said Bert Seither, one of Southwest's three chief pilots at BWI.
