Valuable $$$ Show Dog gets loose in JFK

A news story playing today on CNN, says a Very valuable show dog somehow got loose from it's(already checked-in) kennel.

The Dog is running loose in the marsh's surrounding JFK's runways.

CNN showed a picture of Delta's terminal.

Is there any "Delta connection" here ??

Yep, sadly, it was a Westminster contender Whippet from SoCal booked on a DL flight back to LAX; rampers looked in the kennel and it was empty. Dog is probably dead, as whippets tend to run and run and run and it apparently isn't well-equipped for bitter winter weather.

Known by the nickname Vivi, the 30-pound whippet from California disappeared from the baggage area at Kennedy Airport on Wednesday. Yesterday, there was still no sign of the white and brown show dog, or even a shred of fabric from the dark woolen coat she wore when she was escorted into her carrier for her return flight to Los Angeles after the Westminster Dog Show. And her tracks had vanished, the searchers said.

Show dog or "heinz 57 mutt" this is awful. Let hope she will be found soon and be OK. While this doggie escape may (or not) be no fault of DL's, it does make for very bad PR.

One would think someone who owns show dogs would buy the best in dog crates and ensure it's properly latched.
It's surprising how many crates have missing or loose bolts and latches when tendered at check-in. A reminder for everyone to doublecheck.

The owner stated that "he last saw the Dog, "AFTER" it had been checked in", MEANING that the animal was in the CUSTODY, and the total RESPONSIBILITY of Delta.

I can't find an "official" statement from Delta !!

(Mabey DL was Understaffed in Baggage claim)

Does DL have their own people in Baggage Claim ??

If so, maybe pampered Vivi has fallen in with a pack and is cheerfully rediscovering her primal doggie within!
