For all of the jetranger guys out there...if the transmission oil keeps rising without actually adding any and the engine oil drops without seeing it on the bottom of the machine...what the heck is going on? As far as I understand, this can happen but is supposed to happen the other way around...transmission oil---> Engine.

Any ideas?

Check your freewheel unit: the seal might be leaking engine oil into the transmission.

Elvis is right, but it''s not that it might be leaking, it is leaking.

And no, it doesn''t happen the other way round. It will always transfer engine to transmission.

CTD is right.
Keep an eye in the Tx oil level and don''t let it get to high...weird thing can happen.
Drain it by pulling the chip plug at the bottom of the freewheel in the enginge bay and pushing on the spring stopper(or whatever that thingy is called)

don''t push the spring as it can get cocked and not seal. disconnect the freewheel supply line at the front of the freewheel(its a 5/8" wrench) and let it drain into the engine deck. also it is leaking and will go engine to transmission

Actually it can go the other way - we've got one here - opened up the engine oil filler cap this morning and it went all over the place.

He''s drained the excess oil a couple of time and still think it''s not the freewheel seal leaking??? Change the freewheel seals, high engine oil pressure is not the problem.

PS if Your handle is ChevyII why do You have a long ranger as Your avtar??

frewheel seal huh? I've discussed the issue with the head wrench and he's even drained the excess fluid on a couple occasions but is still convinced that it can only go one way

Must be a pain in the ### to change the seal I guess!

Perhaps it's the engine oil pressure is causing this...it runs on the high side!

Will have to bug him again...

OK, mea culpa - here''s where I get to eat humble pie.

It can go both ways. In fact, I have seen it go both ways, and don''t know what I was thinking. It will most often go the way that Phil describes, and Chevy II thought, that is, transmission to engine, but that depends on the deterioration of the freewheel seal, and other lab seals in the system. In my defense, I will only say that I wrote that at 9:15 PM forum time, which is 10:15 PM real time, and both are waaaaaaaaay past my bedtime. I had consumed waaaaay too much red wine and shouldn''t have been allowed near any form of public media.

On with it, then.

Chevy - the reason has nothing to do with oil pressure, as both cavities are vented to atmosphere, therefore, very little pressure exists in them. The engine gearbox actually contains very little oil when running, as it primarily a series of jets, and the oil is taken back into the system through the sump. The transmission, on the other hand, contains most of its oil in the case itself, and pumps oil to the freewheel (albeit at a trickle), but therefore will be more likely to give up its oil to the engine.

Hope that clears things up.

Thx for the input CTD...I asked one of the other engineers today...this one has been around since "christ was a cowboy" and ventured to tell me that in '68 they(Bell) changed the seal from a single lip to a double for this reason...

Then he got the 206 book out and showed me how it would only go one way...trans.-->engine.

Even if it was leaking by, the way I described it, wouldn't it be doing it on a steady basis? Mines not!

Scenario #2 This has happened on three separate occasions in the past two years that I'm aware of and the level is usually at or around the "dot"...I like to keep it between the bottom of glass and the "dot".

Might be a gremlin in the hangar that likes to see the level right in the middle of the glass...dunno! This most recent episode happened after "the other guy" flew the machine.

Anyway...I think I'm beginning to pi$$ off the wrenches with this question!!!

In response to that question...I couldn''t find a 206 in gif format! Know of any?

CTD, I hear there''s a meeting on Bank Street Thursday evenings for folks struggling with red wine excesses.

Go to Google.ca, click ''Images'', search for ''helicopters'' and check pages 9 and 10 for a couple of good JetBox pix. There''s probably many more in the myriad pages.
