Continental says 4 more senior officers retire

HOUSTON, March 19 (Reuters) - Continental Airlines Inc. , the No. 5 U.S. carrier, on Wednesday announced the pending retirement of four senior executive officers.

The carrier said the retirees include: George Mason, senior vice president of technical operations; Bonnie Reitz, senior vice president of sales and distribution; Barry Simon, senior vice president-international, and Kuniaki Tsuruta, senior vice president of purchasing and material services.

The retirements take effect on March 25, Continental said.

Continental, which is based in Houston, said these departures, together with the retirement announced Tuesday of Chief Operating Officer C.D. McLean, have resulted in a more than 25 percent thinning of the airline''s executive ranks. Continental said its board on Wednesday elected President Larry Kellner to replace McLean as COO.

The airline announced other executive level changes. Jeff Smisek, previously executive vice president-corporate and secretary, is now executive vice president, with new responsibilities concerning development and alliances. He and Jeff Misner, senior vice president and chief financial officer, will report to Chief Executive Gordon Bethune.

Given the quality reputation of CAL''s management, I bet these folks can have a job tomorrow at just about any airline, if they didn''t really want to retire.

Just a word of advice. Keep your eyes open. We had senior executive retirements before bankruptcy filing at U. They did this to protect their retirement benefits. I hope this is not the case with you. Continental is a great airline. Good luck to you.

Eyes open huh! Were these guys forced to retire or What ? any news>?These were old piedmont guys werent they?
