Continental jet lands on taxiway
Feds probing why pilots missed adjacent runway

Newark, N.J. — Federal authorities are investigating how a jetliner carrying more than 160 people landed on a taxiway instead of an adjacent runway at Newark's Liberty Airport.

No one was injured when the Continental Flight from Orlando, Fla., landed in the wrong place Saturday night. Taxiways have planes, vehicles or personnel on them.

The Boeing 757-200 should have landed on the shortest of the airport's three runways, but it instead touched down on a taxiway parallel to the runway, said Jim Peters, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA had not interviewed the pilot and co-pilot as of Tuesday, but Continental said both pilots had been grounded.

"The pilots have been temporarily removed from flying duties and are assisting the company in analyzing the incident," Continental spokeswoman Mary Clark said.

All navigational equipment and lights at the airport were working at the time, Peters said. The runways are edged in white lights, and have white lights down the center, while taxiways are bordered by blue lights, and have green lights down the center.

"It could have been ugly, God forbid," Russ Halleran, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association local at the airport, told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Tuesday's editions. "Pretty lucky. Overall, that's how we have to look at it."

Newark Liberty International Airport is one of three major airports serving the New York City area.

After the Midway incident in which a SW pilot landed in ridiculous conditions and the resulting crash killed a little boy in a car on the ground, I wouldn't gloat too much. None of us have been without sin and error for our entire corporate lives.

They were at least able to taxi to the gate and NO ONE was hurt, except the pilots ego's. Did you post the same thing when your airline went off the runway and through a fence and killed someone? Surely not, get a life loser

funny that the news knows so much about runway lighting. Last time I checked, there are almost no blue lights on the taxiways in EWR. Those blue sticks are all but impossible to see.

Unless they are brighter than the Runway lights????

I've never seen a taxiway with bright white lights and I've never seen a runway with green centerline and blue outline lights. Taxiways: Fairly dark. Runways: Fairly bright. Only a dumbass could confuse the two.

CO is damned lucky they didn't incinerate that airplane Sat night. Taxiways aren't where you should land.

Profound.
If only life were that simple.

A duuhhhh no s :censored: t sherlock, taxiways aren't where you should land, thats why they made runways. And as for a dumb ass, yep a dumb ass indeed. There is just very few reasons, if any, for them to put the bird down on the taxiway. Does anyone have details of why??

Perhaps one of you non-pilots could tell us!

Well if this NON-PILOT knew, I would tell you. Thats why I'm asking.

I figured you must be a expert after saying:

Please tell me what the very few reasons are for them (the dumb ass pilots) to put the bird down on the taxiway?
