I do not know where the rest of you live but I'm in the DFW area. We are making all sorts of records and not the good ones IMO. We broke our record high (yea DFW) at 109 yesterday and if the WX folks are right we might hit 111 or 112 today. So far we have had over 33 days in a row of 100+ temps (record is 42 in 1980) and I hope we do not break the 1980 record.

Were it not for a/c I do not know why anyone would live here. Mr. Willis Haviland Carrier, you are the man among men. I tip my sweaty hat to you.

Current temp is 109 at 14:39 CST. This sucks.

OH yea. I would not be surprised if it is over 150 in my attic. The mere idea of going up there makes me cringe.

One local weather station is reporting 113 with a heat index of 125. I'm glad I put new dual pane windows in the house this year. This fall I am getting a new AC and attic insulation. I just hope the current unit can survive the summer. I figure after 15 yrs of service it's about time for a new one.

Got an 18 yr old Lennox....had 1 1/2 pound R-12 put in it in June........so far so good. Looking to upgrade maybe in Sept.

Did you see the touchy feely green plan in Baltimore? You could sign up for a program to have your elec reduced during peak.....it went horribly wrong.

After a sweltering day in which 72,000 BGE customers had their air conditioning turned off for multiple hours thanks to their participation in BGE's "Peak Rewards" program, BGE seems to have decided that the energy-saving program at its most intense was not a good idea. On a day when the temperature at BWI was 104 degrees, everybody who signed up for the "100 percent cycling" option in Peak Rewards had their AC shut off at 11:30 a.m. and didn't have it turned on again, BGE says, until "approximately 5:40 p.m." Well after that time many blog commenters were saying they still didn't have air conditioning.

I grew up in Alabama in the 1950's without air conditioning. And, I stll don't know how we did it. In fact, I'm surprised that the Southern United States was even lived in until the invention of A/C!

I remember when my aunt and uncle got a window unit for their den. We all went over and sat in the den drinking iced tea and enjoying the chill bumps. It was so cold in that room you could have hung fresh meat. And, they left it running full blast all day so that they wouldn't have to wait for it to cool down when they got home. Well, until they got that $20 electricity bill for the month of July! Then, they decided they could take 30 minutes of discomfort in the evening until the room got cool. 😀

My mom told me that when they lived in Miami when you knocked on someones door in summer you knew you would be waiting a few minutes before someone opened it. She said they were scrambling to put clothes on.

Right now it is 91 and we are heading to 108 plus heat index. OH joy.

No, I don't. I am looking into that. I have gable vents on my house so I am thinking about using a fan on one end to suck air out. This is our first summer here so this is the learning cycle. When I get the new A/C most of the companies will blow in an extra 15" or so of insulation. That should help quite a bit as the insulation is sparse in certain areas. Atic vent will help clear out the hot air. I have a plan.

I calculated my Jul electric bell based on meter reading and if my math is accurate I should be looking at about $220 or so. Not too bad for 1,400 sq 100+ temps and a pool.

Attic fans make a huge difference. I don't know this for sure but I'm betting a good attic fan will lower the cost of running the A/C.

It's really funny when you're not from the south and you visit, Man do not try to tell a southerner "It's to cold" I've gotten Ice Cream headaches walking into the Wendy's

$220, ouch! An attic fan will definetly help. I've heard that if your a/c unit has direct sunlight on it is to find a way to shade it in order to keep it cool. Maybe a small evergreen or two, but not to close as to disrupt airflow. I also heard from one home expert is when it gets really hot is to put a sprinkler on a low setting so it will keep the a/c unit from getting to hot. Of course if you live in Texas that might get you a ticket for wasting water.

Finally, living where the weather is crappy most of the year is paying off. Sixty-two degrees out with calm winds sitting here watching the Blue Angels take off. Jealous much?
