AA Eagle/ AA Connection

What are the differences between the Eagle and Connection carriers? Why is some called Eagle and some Connection?

Eagle is owned by AMR.

Connection describes the contract carriers at STL: Trans States, Republic and perhaps another. Not owned by AMR.

That's what I thought but was unsure. So Connection is basically STL commuter flights while Eagle does the rest of the system. Thanks for the clarification.
