CEO Compensation: How Much Is Too Much?

Members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law heard sobering testimony from United Airlines flight attendant Antoinette Muoneke on the growing disparity of compensation between workers and executives. In the April 17 hearing, Antoinette spoke of the "life-changing sacrifices" of workers at bankrupt airlines. To illustrate the abuse of the industry downturn following September 11 and of bankruptcy law by airline executives, Antoinette told her story of personal sacrifice. "I cannot escape the conclusion that those executives have exploited the economic downturn and the bankruptcy laws to enrich themselves at the expense of workers like me."

In conclusion, Antoinette fixed her gaze on the Committee Chairperson Rep. Linda Sanchez (CA-39) and said: "Airline executives were well paid before the bankruptcy and I don’t begrudge them fair compensation. But explain to me this, Madame Chairperson, how is it that their pay can skyrocket while the average worker is made to suffer like this? If your answer is that it’s because the law allows it, then it’s time to change the law."

What unabashed nonsense. The bolded portion is simply not accurate.

Four years ago yesterday, AA's non-management employees received options on 35 million shares of AMR.

Those options currently have an intrinsic value of $875 million even after today's stock price decline.

Yes, AMR management has now received about $260 million in stock since 2003. And non-management employees have received about $875 million in stock profits since 2003.

$875 million is "nothing?" Not where I come from.

I don't know ....Why don't you tell us what ideas you have. What is this illusive "something" you think the employees should do? Or are we just "venting" again ?
