FORT WORTH, Texas (Dow Jones)--AMR Corp.''s (AMR) American Airlines said June traffic fell 3.2% to 10.86 billion revenue passenger miles, compared with 11.22 billion a year ago.
A revenue passenger mile is one paying passenger flown one mile.
In a press release Tuesday, the airline said its June load factor of 78.8% was up 3.6 points from 75.2% a year ago.
Domestic traffic fell 4.1% in June on a capacity decrease of 9.4%. International traffic in June was down 1% on a capacity decrease of 3.2%.
Systemwide capacity is down 7.7% compared with June 2002. Earlier Tuesday, American began a round of 3,100 layoffs among flight attendants.
Year-to-date traffic is down 2.3% to 57.8 billion revenue passenger miles, from 59.16 billion in 2002. Load factor for the year-to-date was 71.8%, compared with 70.4% a year ago.
