Good news for young guys flying for the militarty, especially the transport guys, as they are going to have a choice of which commerical job they want......

My guess is that there wont be any surpluss since many of the guys flying for the Military already work for the Airlines.

Most military pilots that I have flown with who have returned from leave voice the opinion of "I came back to this crap?"

I have a nephew who is a colonel in the Air Force and was a test pilot at Nellis for a number of years (until they told him, "Boy, you have played with the toys long enough. It's time for you to take a command." ). A few years ago, when they first started making noises about the fact that he couldn't be a test pilot forever, he wanted to come out then and go commercial. I told him at the time to stay in at least until he got his 20 years--which would include pension and lifetime medical.

With all that has been going on--particularly at AA--he is now talking about exploring his options before he turns in his retirement papers. If he can't get on with WN or DL, he thinks he will just stay in. He has no desire to work for AMR or the regionals or the smaller ones like Spirit. (It's those kind of smarts that got him into the Air Force Academy in the first place.)

As someone else pointed out, reserve and guard guys, but not active duty guys. Think the commitment is 8 years now?

And thats a sizable number. Those who aren't are probably better off staying in the military where they provide housing, Medical and a pension.

Can't disagree there......I always said if I couldn't fly for the military I didn't want to fly, because my theory was at least with the military you have a pay check and retirement benefits and assuming nothing medically wrong, a long career of flying. Commerical still offers more money, and obviously no overseas tours or constantly rotating assignments......but I think we ALL can agree commerical brings with it a HOST of headaches which probably will keep more guys in the military.

Guess it depends on the guy/gal, and the situation....
