Frequent traveler Jerry Grasso calls them "flying minivans" because they're small and seem to be everywhere these days.

Regional jets — miniature airliners that typically carry 50 or 70 passengers — now account for more than one in four of the nation's domestic flights.

speaking of "rjs" .... in just a few years (like 2) domestic RVSM will take effect the EMB s , CRJs are not RVSM qualified thus would be limited to 290 and below (read here in the wx) which would increase fuel consumption and reduce range...wonder if these airlines buying all tthem understand this....

I'm not sure about ERJs, but CRJs are rsvm capable, at least the ones I fly are...

All joking aside, it may be a "newer vs older" issue, rather than ERJ vs CRJ. Don't fly either one but I've heard that the 737-300/400's we're flying aren't. Maybe someone can clarify both issues.

RVSM?

RVSM = Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum. RVSM will allow flights higher than FL290 to be separated by 1,000 feet vertically rather than 2,000 feet. Aircraft without the equipment will be stuck at FL290, burning more fuel, if higher altitudes are otherwise full.
