The $4.8 million improvement project at the Hilton Head Island Airport that included the widening and resurfacing of the runway is nearing completion, but more construction is about to get under way.

Crews this week were finishing paving the parking lot on the general aviation side of the airport, a project that has been under way in various forms since the summer. That project added trees, fencing, drainage and other small improvements to the airport, in addition to the upgrades to the runway. The widening and thickening of the runway, which forced the airport to be closed for two weeks, created a safer landing space for airplanes, airport officials said.

APAC-Southeast, the contractor doing the airport work, is finishing a punch list of final items to be completed at the site, said Chris Eversmann, the airport's consultant with Wilbur Smith Associates.

APAC spokeswoman Deborah Galloway said crews were scheduled to finish paving the lot over the weekend and will start the final striping on the lot today. All work should be done by the end of the month, she said.

"There was just some odds and ends they were finishing up," she said. "We're well ahead of schedule on that as it stands now."
