The Fort Worth, Texas-based airline lost $75 million in the second quarter thanks in part to a hefty federal aid package. The loss equaled 47 cents per share, compared to a loss of $495 million, or $3.19 per share, in the same quarter a year ago. In the first quarter of this year, AMR lost $1.04 billion.

Excluding special items, most notably $358 million in government reimbursements for airport-security costs during the Iraq war, AMR lost $357 million, or $2.26 a share, in the April-June quarter.
