This is going to be very interesting... Detroit- South America FINALLY! I predict Tokyo-Sao Paulo via LAX first. Competition is a great thing! Good for you American!

AA's presense in Asia is no where near NW's. Don't you think there is plenty of room for another carrier to check into the Asian market?

AA service to NRT with 777, silver beauties they are too. LAX( starts in April)and JFK the most important cities on each coast. SJC , a little extra, DFW & ORD: two huge hubs and the biggest market between the coasts. Didn't NW Stop its own ORD- NRT service, a few years back?

NW has a strong legacy in Japan and Asia, it should be proud of its history. But the future is not hubbing in Japan but flying from the US NONSTOP to ASIA. UA, with a large NRT hub strikes a nice balance, by hubbing but also overfyong Japan to HKG and other important centers. FROM its DTW hub NW flies to NRT, KIX and Nagoya, not HKG or PEK, as they once did. NW doesn't have a strong west coast gateway like UA at SFO. LAX use to be NW big California airport but they cut way back. NW at various times has gone to SYD, KIX, TPE and NRT( today only NRT). NW needs to buy 777LR or A340-500 to reach deep Asia. I'm talking 18 hour flights, The goal should be to have nonstop USA to each major city in cluding Bangkok and Singapore. Tokyo will still be huge but all flights to NRT should be with Tokyo only traffic. DTW with its upper midwest position is perfect for a new era of longer haul flights to all of Asia.

We finally live in an age with planes to reach the ends of the earth without stopping, Soon we will see flights from JFK, ORD and California reaching places they never did before. Imagime Qantas fron JFK to SYD nonstop, THai from Lax to BKK or JFK to BKK, & Virgin Atlantic from LHR to SYD ( sorry BA).

JFK777--

I agree that NW should do some overflying of NRT (i.e. HKG). Would the A330(ex. range) that we're now receiving not have the range to do some of these Pacific routes? Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't NW leave the SYD market after some furrow about violating/abusing their 5th freedom rights?

KEV3188,

NW served SYD on 2 routes, the traditional LAX- SYD and JFK - SYD via Osaka, Japan. The issue with fifth freedoms was that NW was flying mostly Japanesse from Osaka to SYD and Local Jfk-OSaka passengers, very few actually flew all the way from JFK to SYD. AT the time AA also flew Dc-10-30 from DFW to SYD via HNL, UA and CAL were still players. Its funny how only QF and UA fly to SYD from the USA today.

NW A330 are nice new ATLANTIC airplanes, they may fly from SEA, PDX or SFO to NRT, but they are not true PACIFIC airplanes. NW needs 777LR or A340-500's, NRT will remain at capacity for years to come and NW must become competitive with the likes of SQ's new LAX nonstop to Singapore. That is the future.

JFK--
Thanks for the info/correction about the SYD routes. Since the A330 (extended range, or not) don't seem to have the necessary range we're talking about, I would have to think that the A340 (as a replacement for the 747-400?) would be the best way to go for similarity of fleet.
