AMR Corp. said Wednesday that it expects unit revenue from American Airlines Inc. to drop as much as 10.6 percent in the first three months of this year as passenger traffic drops sharply.

The Fort Worth-based airline company said in an investor update that its consolidated unit revenues, or what it gets for flying one seat one mile in planes flown by American and its regional affiliates, could fall as much as 11.2 percent from the first quarter of 2008.

Earlier this month, American said its February system traffic fell 13.5 percent from a year earlier as the recession dampened travel demand.

AMR will end the first quarter with $3.1 billion in cash, which includes $460 million in restricted cash and short-term investments.
