Another reason to boycott walmart

That made my day. I needed a good laugh.

I am guessing there is a job opening in the Wal-Mart product review department or who ever signed off on that one.

My guess is they get hundreds of sales requests and just go on what ever the publisher sends them. I doubt anyone even opened the book.

That was funny!

And I'm not gonna boycott Walmart over a stupid mistake . .I'm gonna boycott them because their stores are awful! Target all the way! 😀

Isn't Wal Mart already being boycotted by every part of the political spectrum? But the aisles of Wally-World still seem to be crammed with shoppers. All thinking, no doubt, "I'm supposed to be boycotting this place, but I just HAD to get in here and get that $39.00 DVD player.(or other fine discount product(s))" 😀

You're making an all-or-nothing specious argument. Just because many do boycott Walmart does mean their stores will be empty, or that the boycotters are somehow hypocritical. In any case, how else would you explain the success of Target, or better yet Costco ( who is kicking Walmart's arse BTW )

Since when is Costco doing better than Wal-mart? By what measures?

More sales per sq/ft. ( $795.00 vs 516.00 ) Operating profit/employee. ( $13,647 vs 11,047 ) Labor costs are a lower percentage of revenue than Sammy's too. ( 9.8% vs 17% )

Plus the lack of whatever low-brow stigmata Wal-Mart may have.

Wow, I didn't know that. But I guess that stuff can be expected when you're comparing a warehouse type store to a mass merchandise store. The club store setting has an advantage in all the things you listed.

Wal-mart has 13 times the Operating income that Costco has. I don't think it's fair to compare stores that are that different in size, of course the bigger one will be less efficient.

And don't worry, when Costco gets as big as Wal-mart all of the anti-big-business people will go after them, too.

Yep, I agree that those statistics are nearly useless in comparing the 2 stores. Using those types of statistics, the mom and pop shop down the street from my condo is much better than Costco and walmart.

It is only 750 square feet, so it sales per sq. foot is $1000. The mom, pop, and 3 sons are the only employees, so its operating profit per employee is $150,000...etc...

Oh I wouldn't say it's a useless ( nearly or not ) comparison by a long shot. Costco isn't as big as wally world, but it's not a "mom & pop" outfit either. They're demonstrably more efficient, and so economies of scale would tend to make them look even better in growth ( even allowing for the erosion in efficency that comes with getting big ). Southwest airlines was once dismissed as too minor a player to be worried about by major airlines ( and by extension, implying the irrelevance of their business model ) Now they're a major, and a major force to be reckoned with.

Addendum: The comparisons of sales/sq ft and profit/employee are for Costco vs Sam's Club. They still beat them at their own game. The last comparison, labor cost per revenue, is for Wal-Mart.

Costco also pays their employees living wages and provides them with real benefits, such as health insurance.

I had NO idea that Costco was a communist, anti-capitalist organization!

Oh, and Wal-Mart put out an advisory within the past month stating that they expected lackluster year over year performance in Christmas sales. A couple of days ago, they issued another advisory that the first advisory had been overly optimistic.

Sorry, should have put "snark" tags in that post... 😉 I wasn't at all trying to make an argument pertaining to Wal-Mart's success versus other discount retailers, just noting the wide popularity of boycotting Wal-Mart by all segments of the political spectrum, from the left because of such things as paying crap wages with no benefits, from the right because of the books they sell or the ammunition they don't. And I want you to know, sir, that at least some of those boycotters ARE hypocrites (and I should know!)
