Its been a few days since I have dropped in to see what is new (and is it ever late now!) with United and I see that it is rather quiet on the Western Front. In other words - nothing new. Certainly there must be some news of the July and August load factors, cash flow, lease negotiations. staffing requirements and all the other tidbits of interest. Of course August is the big vacation month so I understand if everyone has taken a bit of a pause.
Cheers

Well, I'm back from 2 weeks away, and I must say it's nice to see the quiet state. Sometimes no news is good news. It also looks like the naysayers have vanished. Maybe from here on in, UA employees, customers, and those with an interest in UA's survival can reclaim this forum and have some constructive conversations. 😀

All has been well out on the line. Loads have been extraordinary. Every plane I've flown has been completely full. There were some difficulties due to weather and and the blackout of 2003. But overall our employees did an excellent job, and passengers were relatively understanding.

Wonder what the chances are of the government reimbursing the airlines for lost revenue due to another gov't screw-up? (lack of investment in infrastructure)

Good to hear from you again. I hope all is well on the other side of the pond. Like many others, I was also away on vacation for nearly three weeks in late July and early August (my wife and I made our first visit to Alaska -- spectacular scenery and wildlife).

As for news, there are three items that have been out for a little while that you apparently are not aware of: (1) United's July load factor was a record 82.9 percent; (2) United recorded an operating profit of $20 million for the month of June; and (3) United had a daily positive cash flow of $3 million in June.

I have also begun to see local TV advertising by United, showing fares from the Washington area (where I live) to various domestic and international destinations. Perhaps this is happening because United has a hub at IAD, but I can't remember when United did this much local TV advertisng. Maybe it's another little-mentioned but vital component of the carrier's strategy to attract more passengers and revenues. I guess that we'll have to wait and see.

While all of these items are only small steps, and many hurdles still remain before United emerges from bankruptcy, in the aggregate (together with 767jetz' observations above) at least the carrier seems to be moving in the right direction.

Borescope,

Please don't start with that again.

Jetz,

People read these forums for a laugh. Most of the info on here is an opinion and that is all. In reality, unless you are in upper mgmt or an attorney on the UAL case you have little insight into what is happening. We are the pawns and mamgt is the manipulator. Have fun here and read what everyone (including Chip) says with a grain of salt. You can't do anything about the outcome of our company it's not in your hands.

Borescope,

"You can't do anything about the outcome of our company it's not in your hands. "

I completely disagree with this statement. Employees ARE doing something about the outcome of UA by doing such an excellent job, day in and day out. The extra effort people are putting in is starting to reap rewards. We may not have a say at the board level, but we certainly can all contribute to the successful outcome of our current situation.

I applaud every employee who is going th extra mile, and running such an awesome operation!

Thanks for the information Cosmo and 767jetz. It sounds as if there is momentum in the right direction and it will prove interesting to see what the August results are going to be.
It seems as if Mr. Tilton is slowly building his senior management team. What I found interesting about this was that it seems that United was able to pull a few of these executives away from American Airlines. It would seem rather strange would it not for execs to leave American for United if they were not 100% confident in Mr. Tilton's plan?
I have heard that United has gone on the offensive with an aderstising campaign and at least is tackling the revenue problem and not relying solely on cost cuts. What revenue is there to be generated in this market? I certainly am not sure but it seems to be a wise path to follow to vigorously compete for those customers that are available. When the economy finally turns, these passangers will already "be in place' so to speak. As a side note, United has always adverstised well in England. Is it possible that against all naysayers' prognostications that Mr. Tilton is actually quite capable of running an airline and is, thank you very much, in the process of doing so? It will be interesting to see where the leases all fall.
We often hear the maxim that "nothing succeeds like success." Although it is sounds trite at first I believe there is a lot of truth in it. 767jetz's attitude seems to well reflect the desire for employees to play in a winning team. This is where I would disagree with Borescope. Although one cannot let the stress affect the life and one must not fret over the uncontrollables, it is another thing to have a passion for your work and assiduously follow the trends. From my observations it seems as if the industry attracts staff who often grew up with airliners in their blood. This passion is reflefcted in their thrist for knowledge. Of course few if any on this board are privy to the boardroom. In fact, not to stir a sleeping dog, but that is the trouble that I had with a certain Airways' poster claiming executive access and knowledge. But! I stated a few weeks ago that solid observership can often be uncannily accurate and I look forward to the future to see how those of us on this board did in our seer ablilities. It is one thing to look blindly into the future, but many on this board attempt a rational (though often to the disagreement of others) stab at following the trends. I for one do not find this a worthless exercise but rather a reflexion of those who have an interest and in the case of the employees, a direct stake in events.
Cheers

Is it possible for someone to explain why I have a "warn 0%" icon next to my posts and name? Am I under surveillance by the moderators. Am I the sole provocateur on the board in that I merit my own special warning meter? If my posts are worthy or warning may I encourage the moderators not to read the editorial pages of the London newspapers!

Ukridge:

I too have a "Warn (0%) with pink dashes beneath my name. Its interesting that when I look at your posts, I do not see the "Warn (0%) anywhere. Are you able to see the "warn (0%) with pink dashes under my moniker? Go to my post at Pictures. I have asked the moderators to remove such distinguishment.

A bit off topic, but don't worry about the "warn 0%." I have it too. I believe everyone does and it is only viewable to us when we are logged on under our user name. Others can't see it. I believe it is a feature of this new format. Probably a good thing to keep those that don't follow the rules in check.

Just be glad it doesn't say "warn 99%!" 😛

You may be surprised with what could occur at UA before the holidays, then again maybe you will not...

Best regards,

Oh well, we all knew it was too good to last...

You got that right Bear96. It was a refreshing breather while it lasted! <_<

Here are the things that will surpise Ukridge:

1. If Alister Cambell will have to take the fall in the Kelley/BBC affair
2. If the NHS is reformed into a viable health care provide in the UK
3. If a referendum on the Euro will be floated before year's end 2004
4. Anything new in the Arsenal/Man U rivalry.

Other than that I will have to admit that I will not be too surprised by events whether before Christamas or after.

Also, is it me or is this site getting harder and harder to read? Such little font and so many symbols.
Cheers
