Mike Boyd seems to think that the Airline Quality Rating report is good for little beside wrapping fish or lining birdcages. Of his many gripes, there's one I do agree with - the Quality Rating, like the Air Travel Report it's based on, considers individual airlines instead of individual airline systems.

The result is that bigger express affiliates get their own rating even though no one buys a ticket on those particualr airlines. A Delta ticket may be for travel on Comair, an American ticket for travel on Eagle, a US Airways ticket for travel on Mesa, etc.

Maybe someday the BTS will catch up with the way the industry is structured and compile the statistics for each airline's system including flights operated by express divisions/affiliates. If that day does come, however, the statistics for the legacy carriers and the quality rating derived from those statistics will be even worse than they are now - just look at the "airlines" that populate the lower part of the ratings.
