I see you failed to address that Amawhatshisname is pretty much a figurehead president. He can rant all he wants about anything (remember Saddam???) but he doesn't have the authority to do anything...and Khameini isn't what I'd call his strongest supporter.
A scathing rebuke from Dorthy and Toto land...
In practice, however, presidential powers are circumscribed by the clerics and conservatives in Iran's power structure, and by the authority of the Supreme Leader. It is the Supreme Leader, not the president, who controls the armed forces and makes decisions on security, defence and major foreign policy issues.
However, there is evidence he was elected with help from the clerics and uses the Revolutionary Guard as his muscle.
The election of Ahmadinejad, in a flawed electoral process manipulated by the clergy and the Guards Corps, is the latest attempt to suppress the democratic spirit of the Iranian people. And far from enjoying the popularity suggested in your news story (A year on, Ahmadinejad's popularity is soaring, June 21), the regime is struggling to enforce its position through terror and manipulation
