Atsb Agreement Final Through June 30

1) WN moved into PHL
Their mistake, perhaps.
2) DL launched a fare realignment
Because DL has the GREATEST exposure to LLC of any major...what else could they do?
3) WN decided to move into PIT
One of the lowest OandD markets in the USA....NOT a normal SWA move
4) NW decided to start nibbling at the western fringes of U's hinterland from DTW.. Huh?
5) Fuel prices, which are still alarmingly high...for EVERYONE. Other than hedging, which is now an even bigger gamble, is an equal risk for all carriers. Greeter.

It absolutely is a normal WN move. Their MO is to move into a market that appears to have O&D depressed by high fares. That's how they're able to carve out a niche in what otherwise appears to be a saturated market.

PIT is hardly one of the lowest O&D markets. It's O&D is larger than CLT, CVG and many others. It's O&D will get larger as average fares fall because of WN entry. US has certainly proved the economic maxim of suppressing demand through high prices.

Exactly. If history is any guide, then PIT O&D could double or triple once the WN effect stimulates demand. Additionally, leakage will become a problem for CAK, as PIT is able to hold onto its catchment area.

From a NWA press release a few weeks back:
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will be the eighth destination in Pennsylvania served by Northwest and its Airlink partners, complementing existing service to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Allentown, Harrisburg, Erie and State College. Service to Latrobe also begins April 4.

They're also starting up Charlottesville VA, which has also been pretty much a monopoly market for US.

As I said, it's nibbling at the fringes and nowhere near the full frontal assault that continues at PHL.

Well turnabout is fair play, we are increasing service to DTW, and MSP as well from a variety of points

Use of the E-170 has been very successful on these routes.

And in case you have not noticed, we are trying to transform from doing just the hub flying we used to do (from those very places you mentioned), to the more efficent and productive point to point flying.

Why should we go to a gun fight with a knife, worrying about westbound connections...? Instead we can still make southbound connections from those cities through the CLT hub (where we are far stronger than the NWA hub at MEM). And utilize our assets to carry full planes, on a high frequency into the NWA hubs from better O+D cities like DCA.

Time to stop flying like it is 1985.
