Corrosion is the nemesis of aircraft. That's why the push is to go to carbon-fibre for every part, big and small except for gear, flaps and of course, engines.

Metallurgy rules state:

Metal type A + metal type B + any oxidizing agent (such as H20)

= electric current and...

corrosion.

Corrosion is not exclusive to the Airbus. All aircraft have levels of corrosion. If water meets metal, sooner or later you get corrosion. You find it, then you fix it...life goes on. The few Airbuses that were delivered without Phase II corrosion protection were treated during S checks. The lav pans did have to be replaced on some aircraft but that is not to say that the aircraft were found to be "rotting" during heavy maintenance. That is a distortion and exaggeration and does nothing but erode public confidence in a large part of U's fleet.

I've also been told that Airbus has extended and the FAA has approved additional time between heavy checks based on results from these checks performed on U aircraft.

320's do corrode fairly well in the "wet" areas guy.... 😉

Airbus could not produce the lav pans fast enough as all operators had the problem, our planes were three years old or less and had substantial corrosion.

And the older US Airbus got a six month extension so instead of five years for an S-check, it is now five and one half.

Unless Boeing starts a second production line the 787s are pretty much sold out for delivery until about 2012.

They could be looking at leases. ILFC places huge orders, they might have some open positions.
