"This emergency AD was prompted by recent incidents involving lithium ion battery failures that resulted in release of flammable electrolytes, heat damage, and smoke on two Model 787-8 airplanes. The cause of these failures is currently under investigation. These conditions, if not corrected, could result in damage to critical systems and structures, and the potential for fire in the electrical compartment."

What is causing the failure.....anyone know?

Wasn't one of those stimulus companies doing lithium ion batts and weren't they flaming up?

It's also the first Boeing plane to use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for its main electrical system. Yuasa batteries are worst in the world. They will short out on you when you least expect it. This experience comes from the motorcycle world. Boeing should used another vendor,like panasonic or exide.

You were so hoping they were a Solyndra like company and you had your bubble burst.

Another interesting thing about that company is that they were just awarded a contract to provide batteries for the space station.

Excess voltage in Boeing 787 battery

Photos provided by the Japan Transport Safety Board of the lithium ion battery that was located beneath the 787's cockpit show a blackened mass of wires and other components within a distorted blue casing.

Japan transport ministry investigator Hideyo Kosugi said the state of the battery indicated "voltage exceeding the design limit was applied" to it.

Lithium batteries have had numerous fire problems.
IIRC, airlines quarantined these batteries from transport in the 90's.
Many avionic systems that had these batteries were also subject to combustion.

For the life of me, I can't see how these batteries should be used for commercial aircraft. Sure, lighter and more amperage, but at a cost of these lil fckers burning. Naturally, there will be much finger pointing as the supplier will blame anything else.

How Boeing and the FAA approved this configuration is beyond comprehension.
But Hey, that's why they are referred to as the 'tombstone agency'.

Just read that the FAA and NTSB thinks its a bad batch of batteries and they were overcharged.

Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. officials and Boeing are investigating whether defective batteries from the same batch caused incidents in two 787 Dreamliners that triggered the plane’s worldwide grounding, according to two people familiar with the incidents.

Bad batch of batteries is a quick and easy fix.
What do you expect them to say
Don't be surprised when an AD is issued for voltage and current limiting redundancy is added.
Then we'll see if there is a next fire.

I did not realize that the 787 had an electric compressor based press system. No bleed air. Wow.
